We certainly don't need giant carcasses of steel plowing through the air as we do on the highways and streets. Bloated metal bubbles that serve to assuage the egos of the few endanger all of us already.
Personal transportation from point to point, perhaps similar to airborne bicycles, would be quite nice.

Remember we heard autonomous vehicles will be here by 2018? They were testing in 2016 and then a few someones got killed. Today, we have the self-parking and autonomous retrieval system. It takes time to work the bugs out and few people will die before all the bugs are worked out.

Such a system would require an enormous infrastructure investment so probably will never happen. Future cars, flying or not, will be autonomous since humans are terrible at such tasks compared to machines. And machines are getting smarter every year while us humans on the other hand... Flying cars will look a lot like today's drones, multi-engined so the loss of one is manageable. They will be short distance travelers so they won't need to go very fast.
