Watching SpaceX Reminds Me of the 60’s Space Program

Unlike NASA, who must rely upon Russia, SpaceX can get humans into space
So, you meant operational in just that specific capacity. Gotcha.

NASA, of course, given the resources, could do that as well. As we know from 50 years of watching them do it.

When is SpaceX returning samples from Mars? You know, knowledge we don't already have.
NASA charged Space X and Boeing to build to low earth orbit space capsules to specs. The expected costs to lift an astronaut into space for Space X is about 65 million dollars. The cost for Boeing will be about 95 million dollars. If NASA ordered these craft in parts and built them with heavy overseeing to specs it would cost at least a few times more to send an astronaut to low earth orbit. To much political interference, corruption and pork and quotas and PC and more. Obama was not a space flight lover. So he saved money by not letting NASA build the craft themselves even though he is a statist. As it is, the Orion space capsule and the SLS will be very expensive to launch. They are NASA controlled and built with heavy oversight from big aerospace companies.

This is why it's difficult to take Fort Fun Indiana seriously. Maybe he does read about some of the stuff he talks about, but then you realize he's made some colossal error such as with Space-X :abgg2q.jpg:.

I learned from 22lcidw that it's Boeing and the Orion space capsule and SLS rocket to do the heavy lifting of getting humans to the moon and not SpaceX. It wil be much more expensive than SpaceX stuff. What does SpaceX have on tap and for when?

SpaceX is targeting space tourism. Of course, they will also be happy to cash NASA's checks.

SpaceX can get astronauts to space.

Government run NASA cannot.

Except NASA has zero Mars missions and a 50% success rate on past missions.
Which is the norm for Mars missions, and one thing that makes a manned mission so risky. Again, by the time SpaceX makes its rocket that can, hopefully, do what NASA rockets from the 60s did, NASA will be analyzing samples it brought back from Mars.

And before Shepherd made his suborbital, NASA had a zero percent success rate. Leadership kept them on track. We don’t have that anymore

Not to point out the obvious to the oblivious but it isn’t a question of capability, it’s a question of strategy.

Strategy? Like being totally dependent upon Russia to get to the space station and back?

Putin lover.

That would be your blob.

Paying Russia to haul our astronauts to and fro is more economical than fielding our own program.

Whether this is the best idea—putting all of our eggs into the ISS basket is questionable but since that is the only destination and we have MOUs and private industry to put us into LEO, it was a good idea by NASA for transit to the ISS. Only morons think going it alone is a good idea when the costs are so high.

Interesting. What do you think the first tourists will do on the moon? I think NASA was going to check out habitability at the poles and do their science experiments. They're probably bringing more stuff up there. Their goal may be to make the moon a supply station since they have something called moon to Mars. I dunno.

Maybe. It's been many years since Apollo. Obama just talked a bunch of crap. Trump may get us there, but he doesn't want it to screw up his budget. If SpaceX can do it, then it may be a game changer.

I'm looking forward to Wednesday's launch although read today that there's an increased chance of weather causing a postponement. Agree that the feeling is remindful of the 60's.

In the '60s, there were men riding those rockets.
