Loved these since I had one, GI Joe in the 80's, might be old school but they get the job done

An A-10 Thunderbolt II (Warthog) successfully returned to base after sustaining more than 150 battle damage holes from intense enemy ground fire during a combat mission. Despite the severity of the damage, the aircraft remained flyable, and the pilot landed safely without injury.
The strike knocked out two of the aircraft’s hydraulic systems, which are typically responsible for controlling its flight surfaces. In most situations, this level of damage would make the aircraft impossible to fly. However, the A-10 is built with a unique survivability feature known as manual reversion.

This system provides a purely mechanical backup, allowing the pilot to control the aircraft without hydraulic assistance through direct linkages to the control surfaces. By engaging manual reversion, the pilot managed to retain control and successfully return the badly damaged aircraft to base.

The A-10 was later repaired and returned to operational service, further demonstrating the aircraft’s exceptional durability and combat survivability. Captain Campbell’s skill and calm decision-making under fire earned widespread recognition and helped solidify the A-10’s legendary reputation among both pilots and ground forces who rely on its close air support capabilities

The other day, one didn't return. The A-10 cannot operate in any area that isn't covered by supreme air dominance. Its big, slow and quite easy to hit. From an older doctrine, it was the king of the ground and armor attack ships.

The problem is, the A-10 can only go so far forward while the enemies assets to at least hurt if has much more room to progress. Being low and slow only means you are going to be hit more often and not all damage will allow you to limp home.]

Well they can take huge damage to a point and no other aircraft is built to be abused like that

they are slow when they are loaded with bombs, then climb, dive and put that 30mm gatling gun to use

There was 4 before the A-10. The Namesake, P-47, A-1E Skyraider and the A-7d(E)
Crusader.

Let me describe a rightup in the -6 for the A-1E. Engine Vibration and can only make right hand turns. This bird just came off a Sandy Mission and had to be armed for bear. He landed with about 6 ground attacks still on his wings. Here are what I found (after the Demo People safed it up).

I found that there was a tree limb stuck in the engine cowling still beating on a very bent prop. He had also minor small arms holes throughout the entire bird except for the canopy which is a very thick Tank type armor.

I also found that the left side was mission his entire wing from the flap out. Therefore only right had turns which was where the wing would just start to fall off and the Right Aileron didn't have the power to bring that other wing down without putting it into a uncontrollable spin. The Pilot was a young kid not long out of flight school. He didn't say a word, he just walked up to me and tossed the -6 and headed for the 0-club. He was wearing a Snoopy scarf and a pair of colt 45 long colts on his hip. And some mighty find Boots.

These are one of the top 10 planes of the last century in my opinion.

We should start another thread: What are the top 10 warplanes of the last 100 years. And this will be limited not to any particular country's military.

Funny, there was a flyoff against the A-7d and the A-10. They didn't allow the A-7 to carry his 30mm gun pod and never flew for any distance or TOT (time on target) which the A-7 would have kicked it's ass by almost 900 miles. Combat raidious for an A10 is less than 300 miles without refueling. Combat Radius for the A7 was 1200 miles. And the A-7 didn't need any topcap.
When a group of Mig17s saw the bombing A-7, they left the area with or without a parachute.

These are all niche planes. They are about making sacrifices to do things other other plNes can't do. They were almost completely developed around certain hypothetical missions. Other than that they were developed around government bureaucracy and funding. There's really nothing more to be said

that is my dads era in the AF and DOD ATC, he knew all plane like the back of his hand and saw them all too

I wish I could chat with him about this

warthogs are tough

But Iran is mightier .
How many have they roasted so far ?
Start counting how many planes we took out... Iran is defeated.... don't confuse blind stubbornness with winning...
I've seen these warthogs at air shows and they are impressive...

They call it a flying tank....

It did return but couldnt land. Was Sandy ground support and it sent many Iranians to see Allah early.

Great plane. Too bad Iran didnt have tanks out. A10s love them some tanks

They are very cool but also very old. They have been supplanted by drones and slow loitering prop planes.
no drone can carry 16K pounds worth of anti-tank bombs, that is why they are still in use
