"War - Crime in Belarusian village massacre of Dražna 25 civilians were killed in 1943 by 3 NKVD terrorist and 1 Jewish detachments.

"The tragedy of the Belarusian village of Dražna : why did the Soviet partisans kill its inhabitants.

We are all used to hearing about the atrocities of German punishers during World War II. There are many cases where punishers burned villages and killed their inhabitants for helping partisans. But the fact that the Soviet partisans were not inferior in cruelty to the Nazis is usually not said. The history of the Belarusian village of Dražna , completely destroyed along with the inhabitants, is an example of the fact that not only the invaders showed cruelty.

The “People’s Avengers” burned down the village of Drazhno in the spring of 1943, simulating a battle with the police. For a very long time the history of this village, located in the Starodorozhsky district, in the southeast of the Minsk region, was mentioned very sparingly and presented as a partisan victory over the superior enemy forces.

....This tragic story was not recorded in the reports and did not fall into the memoirs - it was remembered by the few villagers who survived the bloody massacre. It became known to the masses only in the early 2000s, when local historian Viktor Khursik collected the memories of these people and published in the book “Blood and Ashes of Drazhna”. Thanks to the work of an enthusiast, millions learned about the tragedy and historians became interested in it.

Eyewitnesses said that the partisans entered the village early in the morning of April 14th. Almost all residents were asleep when their homes began to glow. While some avengers were engaged in arson, others went into the homes of the villagers and killed them right in the beds. If someone tried to escape or was hiding in sheds and cellars, but they were found and also mercilessly took their lives.

Sergei Petrovsky, the son of the former chairman of the village council and one of the surviving witnesses of the massacre, said that all attempts to prove his loyalty to the Soviet regime were unsuccessful. Sergey’s sister, Ekaterina, showed one of the fighters a Komsomol ticket, which she kept sewn in a lining of a coat. This did not help and the partisans shot her right there.

On that day in Drazhno, death gathered a bountiful harvest. 25 people were killed, mostly old people, women, children and people with disabilities. Even the family of war veterans, who had not been touched by the Nazis before, had spared the guests from the forest. 79 village policemen, armed and hiding in nearby German bunkers, were not injured - the Avengers decided not to mess with them.

Immediately after the partisans went back into the forest, the Germans entered the destroyed and blood-stained village, who immediately began to provide medical assistance to the survivors. The name of the guerrilla commander who staged the massacre is well known - it was Israel Lapidus from the Kutuzov detachment.
