It seems MIT made a novel antiviral drug that works in the same way penicillin does with a bacteria.

Basically theyve created a protein complex that targets cells infected by the virus. In the presence of certain viral genes (or their derivative proteins???) it triggers apoptosis. They say it could cure everything from the common cold to ebola.

It only mentions the rhinovirus, H1N1, polio, and hemorrhagic fevers.

But i suspect this is because its all that it has been tested on. One of the lead researchers says: “In theory, it should work against all viruses.”

They even say it should work against outbreaks of new viruses, like SARS.

I would think so. If they can get it to work on any virus, then it's just a matter of tuning the variations.
