U.S. military warns of oil production shortage by 2015 — Autoblog Green
The U.S. Joint Forces command has issued a Joint Operating Environment report that states that surplus oil production capacity could disappear within two years and that there could be serious shortages by 2015. From the report:

By 2012, surplus oil production capacity could entirely disappear, and as early as 2015, the shortfall in output could reach nearly 10 million barrels per day, While it is difficult to predict precisely what economic, political, and strategic effects such a shortfall might produce, it surely would reduce the prospects for growth in both the developing and developed worlds. Such an economic slowdown would exacerbate other unresolved tensions, push fragile and failing states further down the path toward collapse, and perhaps have serious economic impact on both China and India.

Like we didn't have enough problems, already. As noted by the above article, a Kuwaiti commission came to the same conclusion...2012-2015.

Perhaps this is why Obama recently allowed for more offshore drilling?

Yep we have been near peak oil for several years. We would likely be there now if not for the recession.
Learn to live with less.

peak oil is a hoax. Just cause you can stop and block oil exploration politically doesn't mean the resources aren't there.

And that's what's been happening.

In every oil-producing country around the world? That's a pretty vast conspiracy, you are suggesting...

Our country for starters.

I really do hope to get away from massive oil use ASAP though. Would love to see a cheaper and safe way to fuel transportation....*SNAPS OUTTA DREAM*

Ohh we can never run out of oil, god keeps making more for us all the time.
Do you actually think god would let your Ford run out of gas?
God loves us.

Where the hell do you think electricity comes from? 60 percent from coal and oil. That's where. 60 PERCENT. Electric cars are not going to help at all. We need to build a hell of a lot more Nuclear plants something we stopped doing 30 years ago.

Algae/seaweed may be a solution. It is more productive with ethanol then any other crop. We need to STOP using food for ethanol.

And as has been pointed out there is a hell of a lot oil left in this country that we refused to allow be used.

Umm the last time I checked 51% of our electricity comes from coal. Oil is maybe 1%? I forget.

Ringel....shale oil is only worth getting according to the article, is if oil prices are sky high....also, there are fresh water poisoning concerns with the mining/heating in the ground and pump from what I had read a few years back....another concern is how much energy they have to burn to heat it to get the oil makes it not that profitable....

I am ALL FOR getting the shale oil, if it can be done safely and more importantly, if we could get it a decent price.....

This is not to say we can not develop such a means and thing....we are filled with very smart people in this country and field.

Or perhaps this is why we strong-arm oil nations?

the ONLY thing we can do to affect this immediately is to CONSERVE...cut back....we are not buying as much so China ain't making as much either, this should conserve some of that oil usage...

It is estimated that usa pumps 3% of the world's oil while using 26% of the world's oil....

conserving is the only way to impact this immediately, not years out, pumping oil....years out pumping oil will help when it is pumped, not now with prices and shortages....so that is important too, but NOW, we must cut back on our oil use, world wide....to slow down this pace and leave some for our future generations.
