The World Economic Forum identifies 12 pillars of competitiveness. They divide those between

Basic Requirements, which include
  • Institutions
  • Infrastructure
  • Macroeconomic environment, and
  • Health and primary education

Efficiency Enhancers

  • Higher education and training
  • Goods market efficiency
  • Labor market efficiency
  • Financial market development
  • Technological readiness, and
  • Market size

Innovation and Sophistication Factors
  • Business sophistication
  • Innovation

Interestingly, while the US ranked highly in the latter two - 3rd and 6th respectively - it ranked 36th in Basic Requirements.
