UPS Looking for a Few Good Drivers

From the linked article.

Driver training is crucial for Atlanta-based UPS, which employs 99,000 U.S. drivers and says it will need to hire 25,000 over the next five years to replace retiring Baby Boomers.

UPS is a tough company to work for. Every second of your time is accounted for.

It is good salary though

Umm it is replacement jobs for retiring employees over the next 5 years. Not additional jobs now.

Nothing to do with recovery jobs folks, just disperse and go home, nothing to see here.

Still more people employed as retirees are no longer in the workforce

HUH? What part of "replacements" did you not understand?

If you replace 4 of your tires you now have 8 on your car?

Yeah god forbid the company paying your salary keeps tabs on you so you're not at a strip club while on the clock.

I had a neighbor who drove for UPS. It goes beyond visiting a strip club on company time. Every second of his route was planned. He was not allowed to answer questions for customers, only hand them a card and give them a number. Your route was strictly regulated with no margin for error.
It paid well but was very stressful

25k retire and 25k hired to replace them. That's a wash.

The 25k who retire are still getting a paycheck

The 25k hired get a paycheck they were not getting before

In a bad economy, people who retire are not replaced

The company wants to hire 25,000 new drivers at an average salary of $74,000.

Looks like we may be turning the corner on jobs!!!

creepy

Trainees must pay attention to detail and appearance and work as a team. Students whose brown uniforms aren't ironed properly -- hanger creases are forbidden -- lose points for their teams, as does any trainee caught without his keys. UPS requires drivers to wear keys on their ring fingers to avoid wasting time searching for them.

"Raise your hands," Mr. Breslin ordered one group. Five jingling pairs of hands went up. "Good job," he said, clapping. "See how easy it is to bond with your keys?"

One reason Vets adapt to UPS jobs the best.

In a good economy people who retired were not replaced. It was called increasing efficiency.
UPS has no choice if they cover their routes they need X amount of drivers.

I can see people who never lose their keys, but don't wear them on their fingers, getting fired when budgets need to be tightened.

These jobs pay well, but at what price? Will mom or dad work all day at these jobs and then come home miserable and crazed?

UPS is not noted for treating workers well.
