Mysterious East Coast Flooding Caused by Weird Wind Patterns

At the time, the unusually high tides caught people by surprise. Now, researchers know why the ocean was flooding beaches and barrier islands: Sea levels temporarily jumped by up to 2 feet (61 centimeters) above the high tide mark, as measured by tide gauges along the Atlantic Coast from Maine to Florida. Over the two-year period, coastal sea levels rose an average of 4 inches (10 cm) from New York to Newfoundland, Canada, researchers reported today (Feb. 24) in the journal Nature Communications.

"This extreme sea level rise is unprecedented in tide gauge records," said study co-author Jianjun Yin, a University of Arizona geosciences professor who specializes in climate modeling. "This is a one-in-850-year event, based on the past records."

Further in the article, it states part of the cause was unusually warm waters in the far north. Something we are seeing a lot more of now.

October 27, 2015 - Some out there who believe that all of this flooding could be a sign that the judgment of God on America has begun.

Over the past 30 days, major floods have hit the east coast, the west coast and now the middle part of the country. So why is this happening? Why is the U.S. being hit by so many catastrophic weather events all of a sudden? During the past month flooding has caused billions of dollars in damage, and in many areas the cleanup is going to take well into next year. Some pundits are blaming El Nino, but others are pointing to other potential reasons for why this may be happening. Let's start by taking a look at some of the biggest flood events that have happened over the past 30 days.

Unprecedented flooding has hit South Carolina.​

Hurricane Joaquin never made landfall on the east coast, but moisture from the storm had a tremendous impact—particularly in South Carolina. In fact, the governor of the state said that the region had not seen that type of rain "in a thousand years." "We haven't had this level of rain in the low-country in a thousand years—that's how big this is," said South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley. Days of record rainfall and catastrophic flooding left at least 17 people dead in South Carolina and two dead in North Carolina, Oct. 6, 2015. Thirteen dams have failed.

It would be very difficult to overstate the amount of damage that was caused by this storm. Some officials are estimating that the total amount of economic damage done "will probably be in the billions of dollars." The rains may have stopped in South Carolina, but the danger and the work to rebuild are far from over. "I believe that things will get worse before they get better," Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin told reporters Monday. "Eventually the floods will abate, but then we have to access the damage, and I anticipate that damage will probably be in the billions of dollars, and we're going to have to work to rebuild. Some peoples' lives as they know them will never be the same," he said. Of course this is far from the only destructive flooding event that we have seen in recent weeks.

Bright stars Regulus and Procyon have also been visible this week, forming a line in the sky with the planets.

3:47 pm 11/02/15--We know, skiers and riders, we are ready to get the winter season underway again too. Unfortunately Mother Nature is not as concerned, and the weather here in Killington is simply not cooperating.

We are monitoring the temperature and will start making snow again as soon as we see a window of productive weather. We will keep you posted, right here, with all updates and a projected opening as soon as we have one. Stay tuned and think cold.

One of the reasons for record shark attacks up as far north as they were this year was because the Gulf Stream was warmer and stayed warm further north than normal.

It's also the reason that the coral reefs are dying, they can only survive a narrow temperature range, and it's being exceeded.

I thought the point was that you are an untrustworthy source of information and that you are being disingenuous in an effort to promote your agenda.

In fact it really isn't unusual for Killington to open in Oct. This year it opened only briefly (1 week) on Oct. 19 on a limited basis and then had to shut down again. It has in fact been shut down for over a week and was shut down the day you pronounced that skiers were jetting down the slopes...... with no signs of when they might reopen for the season.

Mon, 16 May 2016 - By 2060 more than a billion people worldwide will live in cities at risk of catastrophic flooding as a result of climate change, a UK charity warns.

A British aid charity is warning that by 2060 more than a billion people worldwide will live in cities at risk of catastrophic flooding as a result of climate change. A study by Christian Aid says the US, China and India are among the countries most threatened. It says the Indian cities of Kolkata and Mumbai will be most at risk. The eight most vulnerable cities on the list are all in Asia, followed by Miami in the US. The report urges governments to take action to reduce global warming and invest in disaster reduction programmes.

Dr Alison Doig, the report's author, told the BBC World Service that people living in large coastal cities were particularly at risk. "I think it's cities like Kolkata, Dakar, the big mega-cities of the south and the emerging economies where the people are most vulnerable to exposure to sea-level rises and to higher rain events," she said. "Flooding in these cities can cause massive damage, but can also threaten life." Dr Doig warned that Florida was likely to suffer extensive flooding. "The whole of Florida is totally vulnerable," she said. "It is so low-lying, it is virtually swampland reclaimed. So significant climate change... raising water half to a full metre this century, will take out an awful lot of Florida and a significant amount of Miami."

The study says that the priority should be to rapidly reduce carbon emissions and limit temperature increase by switching from fossil fuels to low-carbon energy. It says vulnerable communities must be helped by better protecting homes and livelihoods. The study also calls for international systems to help communities recover from devastating storms and floods.

When TV weather presenter Liberte Chan was handed a cardigan and told to cover up during her broadcast it wasn't because there was a chill in the air. The US meteorologist was in the middle of her California weekend forecast when she was given a grey cardigan to put on. Chan asked why she was being forced to wear it, to which someone off camera responded: "We're receiving lots of emails." It's not clear how many people had contacted the station, KTLA 5 in Los Angeles, to complain about Chan's attire. But on social media it wasn't so much the dress, but the cardigan that many had an issue with.

There was a furious response from viewers who thought Chan had been treated outrageously. "Whoa @KTLA I didn't like the dress either, but you don't have to make her cover up-ON AIR like that. How embarrassing," Heather Poole tweeted. Emily Sears tweeted: "KTLA you owe @libertechan an apology. As a viewer and a woman I'm completely disturbed to see this woman publicly shamed doing her job." Another tweet from Gaby Dunn read: "The meteorologist in this video has like four degrees and is working in a male dominated field and this is what it's like."

As users of social media continued in their defence of Liberte's choice of attire the programme presenters read some of the emails to which they had referred to. "Liberte Chan's dress is totally inappropriate," read one. "Liberte Chan looks like she stayed out late and came to work in the same dress," said another. But more than 8,000 tweets have since been directed to the LA based TV station prompting the hashtags #righttobarearms #IstandwithLiberteChan and #sweatergate. Earlier in the day Chan had tweeted a picture of the black beaded dress but following the awkwardly orchestrated cover up she was forced to explain her reason for choosing it. She took to social media to say that a different and more demure black and white dress that she had wanted to wear that morning did not work, because the pattern on it clashed with the green screen, on which graphics for the broadcast are projected. Chan had previous experience of the problems that can occur when an outfit is not green screen compliant.

Chan attempted to draw a line under the furore on the programme saying "It's a dress people, can we talk about my weather report?" She has since posted on her own website that the stunt was a joke: "For the record, I was not ordered by KTLA to put on the sweater. I was simply playing along with my co-anchor's joke, and if you've ever watched the morning show, you know we poke fun at each other all the time. There is no controversy at KTLA. My bosses did not order me to put on the cardigan, it was a spontaneous moment. I truly love my job, I like my bosses and enjoy working with my co workers.
