LONDON (AP) — The legacy of Mohandas K. Gandhi is being celebrated with a prominent new statue of the Indian independence leader in Parliament Square in central London.

Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday unveiled the statue as sitar music played and Indian flags were waved.

Cameron said Gandhi's nonviolent tactics remain as potent today as when Gandhi used them.

He called Gandhi one of the most towering figures in the history of global politics.

The sculpture created by Philip Jackson was inspired by a 1931 photo of Gandhi at the prime minister's residence at No. 10 Downing St.

Just to give a hint to your simple mind: Gandhi did not accept any government position after India won its freedom. So he had no reason to piggyback on anybody. I have respect for Indian National Army; it did what it had to to continue the freedom struggle. I also have respect for Mahatma Gandhi for doing whatever he could to continue the task of freeing India. Both Neta Jee and Mahatma were patriots in the minds of Indians and that is the only view that matters.

You guys have to come up with a different line now. This railway thing is way out of date. You may have had a point if we were still in 1947 but we are in 2015 now. The railway lines that Brits left India with were narrow gauge and meter gauge and they were few and far flung. None of them exist today. The extensive railway network of broad gauge that India has today was all built by Indians.
