I hope his statue will inspire common British people to fight for their rights. The exploitation of common people by British elite is a sad chapter that needs to be closed. The task seems difficult as British media is dominated by the elites.

LONDON (AP) — The legacy of Mohandas K. Gandhi is being celebrated with a prominent new statue of the Indian independence leader in Parliament Square in central London.

Prime Minister David Cameron and Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Saturday unveiled the statue as sitar music played and Indian flags were waved.

Cameron said Gandhi's nonviolent tactics remain as potent today as when Gandhi used them.

He called Gandhi one of the most towering figures in the history of global politics.

The sculpture created by Philip Jackson was inspired by a 1931 photo of Gandhi at the prime minister's residence at No. 10 Downing St.

We all could learn from him...and Martin Luther King...great people who are very very rare aren't they?

From the nationalists Indians I know, they hate Gandhi. They think he piggy backs off the Pro Axis INA and there work during World War Two to resist colonial occupation, like through the naval mutiny.

Regardless of my views on the occupation of India and my opposition to colonialism, I think it is rather pathetic that a so called conservative government is memorializing and celebrating the downfall of it's empire. Great Britain's elites are self hating and suicidal and this is but one more example.

World is heading in the direction which is going to bring more heartache to racist people like yourself. Brace yourself.

Just to give a hint to your simple mind: Gandhi did not accept any government position after India won its freedom. So he had no reason to piggyback on anybody. I have respect for Indian National Army; it did what it had to to continue the freedom struggle. I also have respect for Mahatma Gandhi for doing whatever he could to continue the task of freeing India. Both Neta Jee and Mahatma were patriots in the minds of Indians and that is the only view that matters.

(Slightly off topic)

I did not know hidden behind the ferry building in San Francisco was a statue of Gandhi.

It's time to celebrate the Empire, says Brown

Britain must stop apologising for its colonial past and recognise that it has produced some of the greatest ideas in history, Gordon Brown has declared. The Chancellor called for the "great British values" - freedom, tolerance, civic duty - to be admired as some of our most successful exports. He used a visit to one of Britain's former East African colonies and one of the strongholds of the campaign against 'white imperialism' to make an unabashed pitch for a return to patriotism. Mr Brown wants to make it acceptable again to talk about Britishness after the term was widely discredited by Left-wing critics and social commentators. In Tanzania, on the third day of his four-nation African tour, the Chancellor made a discreet dawn visit to Dar es Salaam's small Commonwealth cemetery where he laid a wreath in honour of fallen servicemen.

They need to be thinking less about misplaced pride in their criminal empire and more about how they can pay reparations. Britain killed and tortured millions of people during Raj. That was nothing but crime against humanity and only a douche-bag Brit would be proud of that.

Nice to see this in a more prominent location.

There are several Ghandi statues scattered around London. I took this photo of the one in Russel Square (Park) last July:

I admit I went there especially because of a very elaborate multi-pun concerning the old boy but will not repeat it here unless requested by at least two people who pledge not to be offended or grossed out.

If it weren't for the British Empire, all that lovely railway infrastructure that has supported so many Indian families and served the Indian economy since independence would never have been built.

You guys have to come up with a different line now. This railway thing is way out of date. You may have had a point if we were still in 1947 but we are in 2015 now. The railway lines that Brits left India with were narrow gauge and meter gauge and they were few and far flung. None of them exist today. The extensive railway network of broad gauge that India has today was all built by Indians.

Er, yeah, I'm sure repairs have been done and tracks recalibrated since we left, but who do you think cleared the tracks' routes and blasted and tunnelled through India's hill country?

The level of brainwashing average Brits is subjected to is downright sad. You people are textbook example of what happens to a society when it swallows too much of its own propaganda.
