UK crashes into deepest recession of any major economy

London (CNN Business)UK economic output shrank by 20.4% in the second quarter of 2020, the worst quarterly slump on record, pushing the country into the deepest recession of any major global economy.
This crash in GDP in the April-June period, compared with the first quarter, is the worst since quarterly records began in 1955. Industries most exposed to government lockdown measures to contain the coronavirus pandemic — services, production and construction — saw record drops.

"Today's figures confirm that hard times are here," UK finance minister Rishi Sunak said in a statement. "Hundreds of thousands of people have already lost their jobs, and sadly in the coming months many more will. But while there are difficult choices to be made ahead, we will get through this, and I can assure people that nobody will be left without hope or opportunity."

Compared with the end of 2019, UK economic output fell by a cumulative 22.1% in the first six months of 2020, a worse outcome than Germany, France and Italy, and double the 10.6% fall recorded in the United States, the Office for National Statistics said.

Among the remaining G7 economies, the decline in GDP is also expected to be less severe than in Britain. Canada's statistics agency said it expects second quarter GDP to shrink 12% on the previous quarter, while economists surveyed by Reuters predict a 7.6% quarter-on-quarter contraction in Japan.

Wales voted in favor of Brexit. Boris Johnson is simply standing firm in agreement with Wales.

You must be so proud of Wales.

I suppose the Labour Party would have done so much better.

Let's face it, the same problems the Brits have are what you exported to Canada: nepotism and a booming kakistocracy.

The remnants of an old system of governance that provides a platform for exploitation and suppression of talent, little else. It's not congruent with success in a global economy that requires the best potential and innovators be leveraged. You can't fake innovation, creativity or problem solving.

Wales is over run with ageing English settlers. And they were lied to. Brexit has no legitimacy.

Wales voted for Brexit. Trying to pawn off responsibility is just sad but understandable given that you recently realized that the English will not cover the loss of EU welfare that Wales was receiving.

Maybe if England paid us for our water we would not need any help.

You can't fake innovation, creativity or problem solving.
You can, however, throw money at it, call yourself doing something, (to buy votes) for your top down ( which can be misdefined as Trickle Down) Keynesean monetary THEORY- theorized specifically for the British monarchy- which Nixon proudly stated; "I guess we're all Keynesean now"- after his 1970's capitulation.

Maybe if England paid us for our water we would not need any help.
Maybe a frog wouldn't bust his ass when he jumps if he had wings- but, he doesn't- what someone decides for another is criminal when one suffers and the other profits legally- especially when the one suffering didn't agree- that's what "group think" Partisan politics employs-

Oh by the way: Do I understand it well that Great Britain will start finally now in October 22nd 2020 the negotiations with the EU about the Brexit after the Brexit referendum from June 23rd 2016, which had the result 50:50 (= "We don't know what's the best to do?") And how long little GB will need to ignore the hopefully coming results of this now last 9 days long new negotiations afterwards? 2 seconds? 1.5 seconds?

There will not be a meaningful negotiation. We will crash out without a deal and the country will suffer until we beg the EU to let us back in.

Yes but at least your bobbies there don't wear masks with political slogans on them! You can die proud.

... There will not be a meaningful negotiation. We will crash out without a deal and the country will suffer until we beg the EU to let us back in.

What a nonsense. Germany has absolutelly not any problem with England. No one likes to blame England. Norway and Switzerland are also not members of the EU. That's no problem. It's not nice now that we have to fight nearly alone now in many points we had common with GB.

But what no one is able to understand: Why is Great Britain with all its exhausting power doing since 4 1/2 years all this nonsense, which is not good for England and not good for the European Union? Why this continous stream of destructive energy - without any concrete plan for a new future of Ol England?

If I see it the right way then Germany lost a lot of power in the last few years - because of the Brexit, the deep crisis with the USA, because of Corona and the discrepancies with Russia and China. And there are also much more problems within the EU now - not to forget our important neighbors like Belarus. Nevertheless I calculate that the BIP of GB would be 10% higher than it is now compared with the BIP of Germany only as a result of the Brexit. And we also lost - so the real losses are higher.

What for? Damn! What for are good all this senseless losses? I hope you will have a great future, so we will be able to say in some years or decades it was good what GB had done in 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020.

The problem has always been keeping the peace in Northern Ireland. The Good Friday Agreement was based on membership of the EU. That did away with borders and allowed both tribes to consider themselves as whatever they wanted. Now that has been ripped up and trouble will ensue.

The tory backers have also bet heavily on a no deal brexit. The British are essentially stupid people voting for an act of self harm.

The behavior of the British government and the parliament to make laws, which are in contradiction to the yet accepted agreements between the EU and GB is indeed ununderstandable. I read today about a video conference of Mr. Johnson with most important businessmen of Great Britain, which is not understandable too. Johnson left after 10 minutes this conference where more than 250 essential companies were informed from the British government ... about nothing!!! Is England the enemy of England now? What for heavens sake is anyone able to say any longer to all this nonsense? What is the direction of England? What are the British rules now? Ruling the waves - but nothing else than only waves? ... I'm convinced the USA will not help GB. Biden made this clear - and Trump will not remember anything and will call whatever information he doesn't like to hear "fake news". So "Quo vadis Britannia?" And with what kind of vehicle?

Begging is what the Welsh do best. Seems that you already miss that EU welfare money. You should really try standing on your own two feet for a change, rather than depending on handouts.

Oh by the way: What about the Calexit? When will California leave the USA standing on their own two feet for a change, rather than depending on handouts? And the most strange thing: GB knows very well that manipulations from the USA are a main factor for the (anyway meaningless) result of the Brexit refendum. Neverthelless Britannia never liked - better to say: did not find the power - to repeat this referendum and is killing itselve now since a long time with a lot of exhausting nonsense. And the demon in the background is for sure not the EU.
