“One of the most commonly employed tactics in election campaigns and in the Culture War in general is name-calling. People and ideas are branded and dismissed summarily rather than being the target of reasoned argumentation. Yes, it's an ancient practice, a staple of American politics from the beginning, but venerable or not, name-calling is among the lowest substitutes for civilized discourse.
In short, Alberlour's Law number 19: "One's ideological opponents are always stupid, and worse."

I was thinking about this earlier. I never called anyone names before I got here. :eusa_angel:

Ever since Pericles opponents called him "squib head" democracy has been going down hill.

If that was meant for moi, rather than a general request, I believe you'd be hard pressed to find any example of my posting language that I wouldn't use in front of children.

And, in that case, one would be led to question your ability to assemble a post.

It was certainly meant for you. Or perhaps you are under the impression that you are the gold standard for logical, polite, and rational debate on here?

Unlike you, I am under no illusions of what this board is: entertainment. If I feel like being intellectual I'll do it. If I feel like being a jerk, I'll do it.

I have never believed that this was supposed to be a bastion of political back and forth and a well of academic debate.

But if you want to start a renaissance, then go for it.

As I said: lead by example.

Yup, I've only seen two people who I can think of off hand that might fit that description and I haven't seen them post for quite a while now. Navy was one of them.

I'd agree with that, at least with Navy being a good example.

Hey, I am all for someone trying to "elevate the debate" (maybe PC can adapt that as her slogan). I probably won't participate, but it's a worthy goal.

And, as I said, lead by example.

PC is already off on the wrong foot.

Well, then, I must admit that I do contend that I behave in a 'logical, polite, and rational debate' and have never used vile language in any form.

Further, when I do use pejorative terms, they are in response to those who, as you state about yourself, "If I feel like being a jerk, I'll do it"...

From the same article in the OP:
"Rational, fact-filled argumentation is one of civilization's greatest achievements. And it is in very short supply, especially as the Culture War heats up in a period dominated on the national level by the Democratic Party."

Personally I think all liberals are poopy heads, but I'm sure there are a few exceptions.

(Was that PC enough?)

I'm not into personalizing disagreements on USMB. But of course there are always a few (worthy) exceptions.

Name calling is childish. But sometimes its hard being an adult 24/7. Just sayin...

I found the article in the OP interesting, but see a clarification is necessary.

Go-2 is correct, the USMB is entertainment.

And I get your point, and plead guilt to enjoying jerking the chains of some of our colleagues.

Further, without some sort of jibe and joust, this board would be academia...a snore.
But the folks who feel that school yard vulgarity is the equivalent of thoughtful debate...well I tend to avoid 'em.

I happen to like really classy vituperation.

It doesn't lead to any clarity, but it is fun.

Most of us here aren't going to be convinced by anything we read here. I don't go for scatological or obscene, but I do like a rude crack that makes you think about three beats before the penny drops. Del is a master at that kind of thing.

By and large, if I don't do gold standard posting, I can do my best to at least reach Zinc levels on a good day.

You put it better than I did.
