Just watching the weigh-ins as we speak. Joe Rogan is interviewing Silva and Weidman just after the weigh-ins.

LAS VEGAS, Nev. The last time Anderson Silva clowned around in the octagon, Chris Weidman dropped him on his back and took away his UFC middleweight title.

MMA: After clowning loss, Anderson Silva gets rematch with Chris Weidman at UFC 168

Silva lost his only match in the Octagon to Weidman, and lost his UFC middleweight title. I hope he learnt that the octagon is not the place to start playing games or to clown around.

Chris Weidman is still undefeated. He was also a two time All-American wrestler in college.

Although Weidman knocked Silva out at UFC 162 in to win the title, Silva is still a -160 favorite to get his belt back. Weidman, the middleweight champ, is getting odds of about +140.

Really looking forward to this fight. Any predictions?

I predict I won't see it. :(

I don't live near any of my UFC fan friends anymore, so I no longer watch the pay-per-view fights when they happen. Just too damn expensive. I didn't watch the first fight between these two either. It makes it very hard for me to predict.

I hope Silva loses, though. I've never liked him. Besides his annoying showboating in the ring, every time he was mentioned it had to be as the pound-for-pound best fighter in the world, greatest ever, yadda yadda. Too much hype for my tastes. :)

I have to agree with you there. I'm hoping that Weidman wins. He has great wrestling :).

Pound for pound, I like Johny Hendricks style. He is no showboater, very modest guy. Look for him to win a championship in the future.

I haven't seen all his fights (again that damn PPV thing) but I think Jon Jones is one of the best currently.

As far as fighters I like watching, I was always a fan of Clay Guida. Between his always-go-forward style and his refusal to change his hair, watching him usually put a smile on my face. :) I haven't seen him fight in a while though.

I like Ben Henderson as well. The first time I saw him was in the WEC, his first fight with Donald Cerrone. I still cannot believe the multiple submission attempts he was able to weather in that fight. I decided he was unchokeable (yes, I made up a word!) because of that fight, and I've seen him get out of some tight submission attempts since.

I've seen Hendricks fight a few times, but he hasn't left enough of an impression for me to comment on. Like I said, I don't do the PPV stuff anymore, so there are large gaps in my viewing between Fox/FX events.

Yeah, I like Jon Jones as well. He appears to be a level above the other fighters, and is currently undefeated in the UFC. He had an issue with his foot and was sidelined, I'm not sure when he will be back. He was the youngest ever UFC champ (light heavyweight champion). He is very likely the best pound for pound fighter in the world. It will take a lot to beat him.

I predict Silva wins and wins pretty handily.

He has a tendency to get cocky, he *was actually better in the stand up (he sees everything literally in some other worldly slow motion), but he started doing the cocky boy dance and got clipped.

If you're hit on the lever, it doesn't matter. Peace out.

But this time, Silva will actually have to "try" and he's a higher class fighter than Wiedman in terms of skill. Wiedman did not even deserve the title shot when he got it, but UFC's talent pool is usually thin. Especially in the heavy weights.

Hendricks has heavy hands, but they're also goofy. That's passable in the UFC though.

Even whom Rogan refers to as "great in the stand up" usually suck absolute ass in stand up from a boxer's perspective. They leave gaps the size of the rio grande. Any UFC stand up specialist thrown in for some stand up versus a hole in the wall amateur boxer would get mopped up, it would be like a little league pitcher facing McGuire on Roids.

Some UFC fighters were boxers.

Not to say that all UFC fighters are great strikers, but I think it just tends to work differently when you have to protect against so much more than a boxer does. Add in the lack of gloves and I would imagine using pure boxing techniques would leave one too open to kicks, takedowns, etc.

I think any amateur boxer thrown in for some MMA stand-up against a UFC fighter would likely get mopped up. While they tried to protect themselves from boxing punches they would eat kicks left and right. The change from boxing gloves to MMA gloves would also probably be disconcerting, not to mention they might be used to the extra coverage the gloves can provide.

You can check kicks and take downs while also usimg correct boxing, all at once bruv.

Well go ahead and take the UFC by storm! Be the greatest striker in the history of the sport using your amazing boxing. Or become a coach and show all those slackers that if they just used better boxing they could be champions, take the MMA world by surprise!

Like I said, there were/are some former boxers in the UFC and probably in other MMA leagues. There are also some highly experienced strikers from various other martial arts. There is also plenty of money in MMA these days, so I'm sure there are some decent boxing coaches involved in the sport.

The majority of MMA fighters might get beaten in a pure boxing match, but the majority of boxers would get beaten in an MMA fight. They are just different sports.

There arent any accomplished boxers in ufc montrovant. There are zero.

...and by the way, Silvas career came to an end last night. Youll never see him fight again. There just isn't enough time for him to come back from an injury like that.

Yea he is done. Yikes @ that bone, ewww. Congrats to Wiedman.

Minotauro Nogueira was a fairly accomplished amateur boxer. He was a bronze medalist at the Pan American Games in 2007 in boxing.

Vitor Belfort won his only pro boxing match.

If the announcers have been accurate, there are a few other UFC fighters that have had at least moderate success as amateur boxers.

And when did this become about accomplished boxers in MMA?

Boxing and MMA are not the same thing. Being good in one does not make you good at the other. Both would require training to transition successfully.

No shit theyre not the same thing, youre the one saying they exist in mma. They dont, the two you named are not accomplished boxers.

There is way more money in boxing than mma, for one. That gives ya a quick glimpse of why the paradigm is the way that it is: anyone doing well in the boxing world would be disincentivised to come to mma.

What the hell does any of that have to do with your assertion that a good boxer is a much better striker than anyone in mma? And what, in your mind, constitutes an accomplished boxer? Nogueira won a medal and two Brazilian championships. That isn't accomplished?

There are MMA fighters with boxing backgrounds. I can only assume your need to somehow deny this is a bias against MMA and toward boxing. Why you feel the need to attempt to compare the two, when they are so different, is a mystery. Boxers fight under different rules, they are trained to expect different things, they use different equipment. They are better BOXERS than MMA fighters, but that is not the same as better strikers. Sure, they can become MMA fighters and their boxing background will likely give them an advantage in some aspects of striking. The same is true of kickboxers or muay thai fighters or anyone with a strong background in one of the striking marshal arts.

I love to watch mma. Got to see Ronda Rousey win again and be a bitch when it comes to sportsmanship. I think I like her anyway.

I think Father Time caught up with Anderson Silva. 38 is ancient to be on top in the fight business. Not to take anything away from Weidman, he is a beast at middle weight.

I've always thought the pound per pound comparisons were kind of silly. There are different weight classes for a reason. The best way to compair two fighters is to let them fight.
