I saw this on the news yesterday and thought it would be funny to see extraterrestrials apply for a mining permit. Or maybe Russia and China will apply for one. if we plant our flag first, does that mean we own it?

Well, the U.S. government thinks that they control the world and all that's in it, why not the moon also? This is par for the course when it comes to a power hungry egotistical self-centered self-serving government that acts as an entity unto itself, answerable to no one except itself.

If They (congress/president) do pass such legislation, then the companies capable of establishing a presence on the moon will pull out and move to Europe or S. Africa.

The US government has abandoned the moon pursuant to Obama NASA policy for manned exploration, realizing that its a necessary stepping stone, and he and the left will not stand for anyone getting around that policy, be it corporate or rich capitalists.

Private enterprise has shown that it can get more done with less hassle and more efficiently than government agencies.
