The U.S. Navy sends three carrier ships off the coast of New York and New Jersey to provide rescue and recovery assistance in the wake of Sandy.

Navy officials told the NBC News that USS Wasp, USS Carter Hall, and USS Mesa Verde were ordered to the area to serve as landing platforms for Coast Guard, National Guard and civilian agency helicopters helping out with recovery efforts.

Officials said the Atlantic Command made the decision in the name of “prudent planning.”

USS Wasp is the biggest vessel of the three Navy ships. This multipurpose amphibious assault ship can carry the full range of Navy and Marine Corps helicopters, conventional landing craft, and amphibious vehicles. Before taking part in Sandy-related mission, it had been serving as a launch platform at sea for testing the carrier version of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

Super storm Sandy made a landfall in New Jersey on Monday, leaving more than 2 million homes and businesses throughout the state without power. Food supply is also another issue for the residents as many of the grocery stores are still in the dark. At least eight people were reportedly killed by Sandy’s wrath. Nationwide, death toll rises to more than 50.

“Tomorrow recovery begins. Today was a day of sorrow,” New Jersey Governor Chris Christie told a news conference late Tuesday. “There’s nothing wrong with that. So long as sorrow doesn’t replace resilience, we’ll be just fine.”

Like New Jersey, New York City is also badly-hit by Sandy which wreaked havoc on the subway system, flooding tunnels, garages, and rail yards. According to a CNBC report, the giant storm cost the city up to $200 million a day in permanently lost economic activity.
