Of course, if you believe that the Trump administration was gullible enough to beleive those numbers, then who is to blame that we did not eyes and ears on the ground in China to confirm or dispute those numbers?

They now have 14 people.
If trump had not defunded it and caused the people to be reduced to 14, we would have had much better information from China.

Heaven forbid that trump or any republican take any responsibility for their actions or words.

There is a lot of unwillingness to understand Chinese reality here. Lots of ignorant assumptions about the nature of both Communist Party and XiJinping’s personal dictatorial rule.
Along with the kinds of foul-ups one can find in any bureaucracy, and in particularities of local and provincial government and party underlings toadying and covering-up to look good in the eyes of Beijing, there are also advantages enjoyed by the Chinese authoritarian system, at least once it gets mobilized to fight against this sort of enemy.
The central authorities (by January 9 having worked out and published to the world the DNA sequence) also early issued public orders that any hiding of information about the virus (by local authorities to central medical investigators) would be considered treasonous. After hesitating and remaining mostly silent, XiJinping finally decided on the eve of the Lunar New Year celebrations to mobilize the whole country and lock down entire cities. This was a difficult but in my opinion correct decision. Xi and his team of experts had finally understood that Coronavirus2 was not just different but ultimately a more serious threat than H1N1 Swine Flu and other epidemic challenges they had faced without taking such measures.
Chinese national newspapers like CaiXin discussed many of the early mistakes made in detaining and pressuring doctors in Wuhan (not “killing them”) which Chinese knew about and had been angrily protesting on the internet — despite strong public censorship policies.
In closing down and utterly disrupting China’s own economy, Xi faced an existential crisis to his personal authority. He needed to emphasize the seriousness of the problem, which would not obviously be helped by hiding the numbers of deaths in Wuhan. Also, the likelihood of leaks should there be more major intentional coverups was great by this time.
There is certainly ambiguity about who is to be included in information on total deaths, and there may well be updates or inclusion of numbers left out (such as people who died outside of hospitals). There may well be further outbreaks of the pandemic as production is opened up. But the talk in the West about tens of thousands of deaths intentionally omitted seems unwarranted without credible evidence.
The chorus of people who accuse me of being “a Chinese shill” should ask themselves why they don’t also accuse the South Koreans or Japanese of “intentionally hiding” tens of thousands of deaths. After all, their numbers are even better than China’s ... and their ability to slow the virus spread was also apparently much more successful than our own.

As more countries express anger and frustration over Beijing’s botched handling of the virus—fueled by a wide-reaching coverup—half a dozen experts told The Epoch Times the regime is undeniably underreporting cases of the virus, but to what extent is up for debate.
Beijing itself publicly admitted to hiding the number of people with the disease when it announced it would start reporting cases of asymptomatic carriers on April 1, revealing that it hadn’t been doing so. China’s National Health Commission also acknowledged that asymptomatic carriers can infect others and cause outbreaks, which it had previously dismissed.

In China’s Shandong province alone, daily new infection numbers were up to 52 times higher than officially published data by the Shandong health commission and China’s National Health Commission. Information provided by residents in Wuhan also indicates the death toll there could be more than 32,000—12.7 times the official figure.

These assets have never been replaced.
