Jair Bolsonaro, President of Brazil, and known as the Trump of the Tropics, is facing impeachment and protests over his inept and corrupt handling of the Covid crisis. There are over 500,00 dead Brazilians because of Bolsonaro’s incompetence.
Bolsonaro is following Trump’s playbook to a tee despite that playbook resulting in Trump’s ouster from power. It appears that as an election looms next year, Bolsonaro is calling his falling poll numbers fake news and now, before a single vote is counted, is making bogus allegations of election fraud. Sound familiar?
“As more lawmakers have come around to support impeachment, the president has begun to warn of fraud in next year’s presidential elections, which are scheduled to take place in October 2022. Mr. Bolsonaro has suggested, without presenting evidence, that Brazil’s electronic voting machines can be easily rigged, and that an electoral loss next year would be the result of fraud.
Mr. Bolsonaro has lashed out against the congressional inquiry, calling lawmakers “bandits,” and saying talk about impeachment is nonsense.
“There’s no point in provoking us, in making things up, defaming us, attacking us 24 hours a day, because they won’t accomplish anything,” he said last weekend. “Only one thing will remove me from Brasília: God.”
Like any good Trumper when they see the people will soon vote them out, they lie about election fraud and then threaten military coups.
Disdain for democratic institutions appear to be a Trumpist attribute regardless of country or boundaries.
