Trump has gone CRAZY IVAN on Tariffs--trade war in process, look out below consumers!

How did the tire tariffs workout?

Obama got tough on China. It cost U.S. jobs and raised prices

President Obama slapped a stiff 35% tariff on Chinese tires in 2009 after American companies complained about unfair competition. They said China was flooding America with tires at low prices making it tough for U.S. companies to compete. The tire tariff gradually waned, and finally ended in 2012.

The tariff saved 1,200 U.S. tire jobs, which had been in sharp decline. And U.S. tire production rose after a major decline.

But a study from the Peterson Institute of International Economics found that the tariffs cost Americans in many other ways.

Americans paid more for tires. Some Chinese-made tires cost as much as 26% more -- rising on average to $39 per tire, from about $31. And U.S. tire makers, facing less competition from China, also raised prices on American-made tires 3.2%.

According to Peterson's model, higher prices from the tire tariff cost Americans an extra $1.1 billion, which translated to an estimated 3,731 retail jobs lost.

Plus, China fought back by imposing penalties on U.S. shipments of chicken parts. The Peterson study estimates that China's retaliation cost American chicken producers $1 billion in sales.

Of course I did, high paying steel jobs where gained not lost...

A Quantification of the Impact During 2002” found that in 2002, more American workers lost their jobs due to higher steel prices than the total number employed by the U.S. steel industry itself.
Yes steel jobs gained, but nearly 200,000 jobs lost which was more than the entire steel production sector employed.

No link to the low wage jobs that where lost?

Steel consuming jobs would be manufacturing. Why would you think they are low wage jobs? You seem really confused. Never has tariffs increased jobs or wages...
Could you explain why you think it is a good idea for the USA to remain dependent on foreign steel and aluminum?

We need low cost steel for our manufacturing to be competitive. If our steel production was efficient we wouldn't be buying foreign steel now would we?
What if the foreigners decide to quit selling steel to the US?

What then?

How would the US build military equipment without steel?

You really think that is going to happen? When has anything like that ever happened? There will always be somebody willing to sell. And if they start drying up we will simply produce more here. Heck maybe we will recycle more.

So, slapping a tariff on cheap foreign steel will force our factories to buy less-cheap but American-made steel, bolstering our steel industry. The first problem is that that means that our factories are paying more for their raw materials, and so will have to raise prices to make up for it. The second problem is that the countries from whom our factories used to buy steel will slap retaliatory tariffs on items they buy from us; those companies that sell overseas will therefore lose business, and will have to layoff workers and/or raise prices to make up for it.

Also, it will strain relations between us and these countries, most of whom are our allies, and possibly erupt into a full-blown trade war, in which *lots* of industries lose money, layoff workers, and raise prices. And every time tariffs have been tried they've been a disaster, and this is on a broader scale than any of them.

Wonderful. Can't wait.

Fuck yes, I agree with the military brass that it can happen. That is the primary reason for the tariff. In the event of war, our enemies could simply blockade steel and aluminum shipments from getting to the USA to cripple our ability to produce armaments.

It is a national security issue.

I am appealing to you to set your idiotic TDS aside for a while and think with a rational mind. Could you do that just for one thread? Or not?

Your comment that "we will simply produce more here" is proof that you do not understand the complexity of the matter. We cannot "simply produce more here" if all of our fucking steel plants are shut down. We do not have the capacity to produce more here.

The ENTIRE reason that the Joint Chiefs of Staff recommended the tariff on overseas steel and aluminum is to encourage an increase in the domestic capacity to produce these vital raw materials needed to produce armaments.

Understand? Or no?

Low paying retail jobs???

"Not a single word of respect" regarding Trump heard during economist's trip of Europe
“Much more likely, Trump is just mentally unstable and narcissistic,” he added, calling the new announcement of tariffs on exports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union part of a “psychopath’s trade war.”

Sachs, a renowned Columbia University professor who heads its Center for Sustainable Development and serves as a senior adviser at the United Nations, said no one expressed “a single word of respect for Trump” during his recent trip to Europe. Their question was: “How did America fall so far so fast?” Sachs wrote.

Trump’s “so-called policies are not really policies,” he added. “Trade wars are on, off, on hold, on again, within the span of days. ... Foreign companies are sanctioned today and rescued the next. ... Global agreements and rules are ripped to shreds. Trump’s garbled syntax and disorganized thoughts are impossible to follow.”

Tariffs have never created a single job in this country, but they've been proven great for job loss's. Now we're in a trade war with several countries. Prices go up on American consumers, you'll pay a lot more for cars, appliances, food & clothing. Then American exports will go down, and it becomes a domino effect on the entire economy. The Federal Reserve jumps in to control inflation, then it gets harder to get a mortgage loan, or short term loans for cars and there goes new construction, and auto manufacturing. Consumers eventually cut back on their spending and the job loss's start in every sector.

Ironically enough these tariffs are going to hit the Trump voter the worst. Those living in rural areas, agriculture, pork & beef, auto manufacturing that voted for Trump and yes when auto manufacturing sales decrease, so does steel and aluminum sales. Well the one thing you can say about Trump he does keep his promises. While he was campaigning on tariffs there was a lot of cheering going on at his rallies. The Stock market will be taking some fairly good hits on this one too. You voted for it, you got it!

You might want to actually consider voting Democrat this coming November.
House & Senate Republicans have proven time and time again they cannot control Trump, and they are stickly against taxes and or tariffs for the reasons above.. Democrats will at least impeach him. Trump has stated if Democrats take over one or both houses of congress, he knows they will impeach him. Once he's gone so are the tariffs. You had a brain fart in 2016, admit it, now FIX it.

It's funny, because before when Trump said "tariffs" his supporters were like "great". Then it looked like Tariffs with China might not happen, and they were like "this is how you negotiate, great work". Now tariffs are back, are they going to be like "tariffs are great"?

Everything that is made out of steel will not cost more to make and prices will go up across the board as steel is a ubiquitous building material. The entire economy is going to suffer greatly because of this one thing. And orange turd thinks this will 'work' with other things.

Derps who see a .1 percent drop in unemployment and cheer, enjoy the moment. A lot of bad shit is coming and that is from Republicans.

Bad typo, it should read "Everything that is made out of steel WILL cost more to make..."

Thank you again for your support.

Actually, as Abraham Lincoln understood, high tariffs protect consumers in the long run, and they also protect American jobs and businesses.

I guess you don't read very well. They cost jobs:
The effects of higher steel prices, largely a result of the steel tariffs, led to a loss of nearly 200,000 jobs in the steel-consuming sector, a loss larger than the total employment of 187,500 in the steel-producing sector at the time.

Could you explain why you think it is a good idea for the USA to remain dependent on foreign steel and aluminum from overseas?

For example, if war breaks out and the USA needs a lot of aluminum and steel to manufacture armaments.

How would it be be advantageous to the USA if the materials it needs are subject to enemy submarine attacks on the high seas?
I suspect the US has more submarines than all the rest of the world put together. And with higher technology.

I'm more worried that Trump would give away American technology and jobs like he did with China and that cell phone deal after they gave his organization a half billion to build a Trump resort.

Republicans laughed when Democrats warned about invading Iraq. And now, even Trump uses the Iraq fiasco as a punch line at his rallies.

Republicans laughed when Democrats said we have to offset the cost of the wars with spending cuts or increased taxes.

Republicans laughed when Democrats said the Bush Tax cuts wouldn't create jobs and would only transfer money to the wealthy.

Republicans laughed when Obama said he would take down Bin Laden.

Republicans laughed when Obama said he would save the car companies.

Republicans laughed when Democrats said corporations would use the tax cuts for buy backs.

Republicans are always laughing at common sense.
