WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. presidential hopeful Donald Trump's support among Republicans has dropped 12 points in less than a week, marking the real estate mogul's biggest decline since he vaulted to the top of the field in July, according to a Reuters/Ipsos poll.

Trump was the favorite of 31 percent of Republicans in a rolling poll in the five days ended on Nov. 27. That was down from a peak of 43 percent registered on Nov. 22.

The dip follows criticism of Trump for comments he made in the aftermath of the Nov. 13 Paris attacks that killed 130 people and wounded hundreds more.

. . . Trump told an NBC News reporter that he would support requiring all Muslims within the United States to be registered to a special database, which his critics have likened to the mandatory registration of Jews in Nazi Germany.

Trump has also been criticized for flailing his arms and distorting his speech as he mocked a New York Times reporter, Serge Kovaleski, who is disabled.

Trump mocked the reporter as he defended his unsubstantiated assertion that during the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks on the United States, he watched on television as "thousands and thousands" of people in New Jersey cheered while the World Trade Center fell.

. . . . Ben Carson has seen his poll numbers drift downward and now trails Trump by more than half, with just 15 percent of Republicans polled saying they would vote for him in the same Nov. 27 poll. . . .

Those kind of poll drops don't mean much. They're a PC reaction only. When people are behind a curtain voting anonymously such things are forgotten.

They mean quite a bit terms of measuring a general mood. The mood to a sizable portion in the interested part of the GOP is that Trump is farting in the corner.

Trump has been seriously staining the GOP core values, and the American people have been looking with the avidity of an oncoming train wreck.

The real conservatives, and those who are the haters, will ditch Trump before NH and move to Cruz.

Rubio and Kasich look better every day Trump is in the race.

The key is ....how much damage has Trump done?

Looks like he may have destroyed Bush and the other governors leaving a weak GOP field behind

The latest poll numbers now (after November 27th) are Trump is up 4 points and is now at 35%. The truth is Trump has gained more ground. Was there ever any doubt? No.

The liberal media has lied so much that they have lost their credibility, Delta.
Their desperation is creating more steam for Trump. Let them carry on.
It's going to take him all the way to the White House.

I have been telling everyone for months now that Trump has all the support he will ever have. The only reason he is ahead is because there are so many others.

True
If Republicans had a normal field of 5-6 candidates, Trump never would have taken off

Jeremiah is having trouble with numbers again.

He is down to 31%, a drop of 12 points, almost 30% itself. If Jere is somewhat right at 35 points, he has dropped 20% in a week. This is from Reuters, as noted above. Jere is pulling her numbers out of thin air.

Trump has seriously gored himself.

What did I tell you guys? Trump and carson were never going to be president.

Republicans don't see their primaries are just a show. Michelle bachman carli fiorino Herman Cain Ben carson Ron paul.

Ultimately the establishment picks McCain Romney or rubio. I told you so. Too soon? Just wait.

the RCP Average doesn't include the Reuters Ipsos poll for good reason.

The RCP Average has Trump's lead near its highs and well ahead in Iowa and New Hampshire.

The rank and file aren't going to get behind yet another Establishment loser.

Hey, Jake, maybe instead of trying to find glimmers of hope as to a possible Trump decline, try to figure out the issues that are propelling him to start with.

Personally, I'm horrified by his xenophobia, but I think he's the one who has finally said the obvious about free trade- it's a shit sandwich for America.

Meh, not really. frankly, Romney's numbers never exceeded 25% until the early primaries weeded out the field, then people gravitated towards him.

If Trump wins Iowa and New Hampshire, he might have what Bush Senior called "Big Mo", the momentum to take him across the finish line.

I disagree. He is popular because of the things he says and those people would support him, but as other candidates drop out, Trump won't pick them up. I think that if it was down to three, trump could very well be last.

His crowd likes that he says as he sees things, not understanding that it is out of step with 80% of America.

But they are in the rodeo, so give them credit for riding the bull.

Trump is popular with low information Republicans....also known as Teatards

Currently about 30% of the base

The remaining Republucans split the remaining 70 percent
