Some of the most prolific songwriters of our generation.

Not only did they write and perform their own material, they wrote songs for other artists as well.

bob dylan ~ the times they are a-changin'

I was going to put it first as I think it started the singer-songwriter genre.
Donovan was at the time considered a British equivalent, though he soon after took a different path.

Leo Sayer - The Dancer

One of the best debut albums I've ever heard (Silverbird) particularly for originality.
Unfortunately, he went off to America and sold out to commercialism and released some pretty dire hit singles written by others.
This song a true story about Janette who Leo knew, fulfilled her dream and went off to Paris to be a dancer.
Whilst performing the set collapsed and she broke her neck.

Phyllis Nelson wrote 'Move Closer'in 1984 but strangely it failed to chart in her native US and Australia but it was third time lucky when reaching No 1 in the UK in 1985.
Most songs even the smash hits from the mid 80's sound dated today but this song really is a timeless classic and sounds as good today as it did when released and no doubt will still do so in another 35 years' time. Tragically Phyllis died in 1998 at the age of only 47 from breast cancer.
