The Mellon family fortune originated with Mellon Bank, founded in 1869. The Family’s impact on philanthropic giving began with Andrew Mellon’s donation in the 1930s of his extensive art collection to provide the beginnings of the National Gallery of Art in Washington D.C. as well as the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery. In 1969 Andrew’s children Paul and Ailsa established the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, which supports museums and art conservation as well as higher education and scholarship, information technology research, performing arts, conservation and the environment.

you can pay 50 million dollars for Latinos to build a human wall on the border, each Latino gets paid 500 bucks!

The Mellons were also the key developers of the aluminum industry and played a very big role in the Texas oil business as well, operating as Gulf Oil Company; Texas was a Progressive state in the in the late 1890's and early 20th Century, and stalled big companies like Standard Oil and other industries dominated by the big Trusts and railroads long enough to give lots of 'little people' a shot at staring up companies and growing them until they got big enough to resist being dominated by out of state syndicates.

Standard had to settle for buying half of Humble and having its Waters-Pierce marketing arm banned from the state altogether. Texas also made all oil and gas pipelines 'public carriers' and created the Texas Railroad Commission, and instigated oil field conservation practices, though it took some years to force compliance with the new regs on well spacing and production quotas. H.L Hunt was a major supporter and developer of those practices, especially in the giant East Texas field, as a side note.

A cousin of mine got one of their full scholarships to that big Art School in Philly, and she is doing very well now as a designer.
