Stennis was an Arch-Racist, renaming the vessel as the USS Trayvon Martin would send a message that we are past prejudice in America.

The USS Buckwheat makes more sense
See the source image

..Native Americans committed genocide/murder/TORTURE/stole land/etc of other tribes long before the whites came.....take down their statues and rename their names

On a serious note, yes, it might be nice to humor a certain group by renaming that ship.

But that young gentleman in Florida was surely no role model!

He wasn’t a traitor like Confederacy.

He was a racist who voted against the MLK holiday as well as civil rights.

And BTW, contrary to Liberal Myth- Stennis' life proves the fact that the liberal story about the Mythical "Southern Strategy" is bullshit. According to the "Southern Strategy" theory, all of the southern Democrats switched parties after the votes on Civil Rights and became Republican.
Stennis remained a loyal Liberal through the end of his Senate career in 1989 and to his death in 1995. The senator showed his loyalty to the liberal cause by voting against Bork.

Not sure why we named the ship after Stennis to start with.

Maybe since the ship is in for overhaul anyway, we could rename her. Lots of good names out there.
All of the ships should be named after any person who was a naval hero or names of honor or ideas. The Constitution, the Enterprise, etc. Naming after politicians and Presidents is wrong.
