Heck, that still leaves you four hours per day to goof off and a full day to rest.

No, it doesn't. Have you ever actually worked 12s? I'm working them right now. I work 6A to 6P. I get off at 6, drive 30 minutes home, maybe more if I'm stopping by the store or doing something else on the way, take a shower, eat dinner etc. By the time that's done it's after 7, probably 7:20 or so, maybe later. It takes time to wake up, get ready and drive back to work as well. If I want to get 8 hours of sleep I get maybe an hour and a half, two if I'm lucky, to "goof off", which usually involves laying in bed watching something until I fall asleep.
