“What do you think professional athletes from the 20th century (1900-2000) would think of the state of pro sports in the last 20 years?”

I think the further back you go say from 1900-1970s, these men and women would scoff at today’s state of things. The ridiculous salaries, the social and political distractions, and the fact that sports are now business first love of the sports a distant second or worse.

That and today’s athletes lack the amount of heart the participant’s showed on the fields of play in the old days. They played not for money but for the love of their sport and did so without thinking about how much money they could make.

While today’s athletes my be finely conditioned, they still lack the heart and desire those who came long before them had. Without considering rule changes can you see today’s NFL players absorbing the punishment dealt out by the likes of say a Dick Butkus, Chuck Bednarik, Joe Greene, Jack Lambert, Deacon Jones, Ray Nitschke, Ronnie Lott, among many others? No chance. Today they stub a toe and go whining off the field.
