That 27% of Americans thinking ISIS represents "true Islam" would probably be hard-pressed to tell you what Islam actually is. Average American knows less about religions than the average atheist. To be reliigous in the US, you have little more to do than say so. Whereas to be atheist you have to have some idea of what it is you don't believe in, and that requires study. So when ever polls are taken like this it's important to take into account Americans as a rule don't know a lot about any religion, even their own, to say nothing of someone else's.
