Not a spin at all, as my link shows, that it was a political difference that caused the problems that nearly destroyed the union. The Southern states simply refused to give up slavery, thus made a lot of effort to preserve it, "States rights" doctrine was one of their efforts to maintain the right to maintain slavery.

Too much emphasis on slavery. The real issue was the tariffs which actually exacerbated the need for slavery as things were made more cost-prohibitive by those tariffs.
That explains why emancipation didn’t occur until the war was already over a year old.
The slavery story looks good in the history books, though. And it makes great fodder for the current crop of history revisionists.
