"The bill would apply to all domestic workers, such as nannies, housekeepers and elderly
caretakers, and would require mandatory breaks, overtime pay and the minimum wage.

If bill AB 889 turns into law, costs for parents who employ workers regularly to watch their children, could rise. Breaks would be required, specifically a 10-minute rest every four hours (A second babysitter would be needed to cover for the breaks) and a 30-minute meal break after five hours.

In addition, workers who live in or work 24-hour shifts would gain the right to eight hours of uninterrupted sleep, and those working more than five consecutive hours would be allowed to use their employers' kitchens free of charge to cook their own food."

The legislature in California is about 2 short of a 2/3 majority in both the Senate and Assembly. The Democrats are in control and most are truly Socialists.

They forgot the aginaldo( = to one months salary mandatory bonus by dec.10 so they can have Christmas money).
They also forgot 14 days paid vacation per year.

Who do they think they are - humans? I say work them until they drop! Then grind them up into cat/dog food or turn them into tasty Soylent Green snacks. There must be some Bible verses to support this.

How about- here's a whacky idea- letting the parents and babysitters work out between them what is a sensible and fair set of working conditions.

No one is locking these nannies in the house making them watch their spawn.

If the Nanny doesn't like her work conditions, she can work for someone else- or maybe go into a line of work that doesn't involve cleaning up someone else's poop.

If the family doesn't like the Nanny's attitude, they can fire her and get someone else.

Fucking brilliant!

Have you ever babysat?

Most of the time you're sitting on your ass watching TV and eating food out of the fridge. To say that a second relief babysitter must be utilized so as to give lunch breaks and rest periods is fucking ridiculous.

Isn't life grand with the left in control.

They hate the traditional family, why shouldn't they mess with how children are raised.

They want everyone to turn out as bad as they are.

Wow, your an idiot...

There is a reason that there are allowences in the labor laws for jobs that cannot reasonably allow set break times. Do you not understand how this will destroy individual workers and cause job loss without reason.

Actually not.

This is the old ‘Liberty to Contract’ argument ruled un-Constitutional by the Court in West Coast Hotel Co. v. Parrish (1937), upholding minimum wage laws.

Workers shouldn’t be subject to the capricious whims of employers’ ‘attitudes’ or ‘likes or dislikes,’ working conditions should be consistent. And employees shouldn’t be compelled to go blindly from one position to another in the hopes of finding a ‘good and kindly’ employer. That some consider this type of employment unimportant or not serious employment is irrelevant.

The above is a reactionary fantasy – it’s no longer the 19th Century.

The bible only makes people prosperous.

It doesnn't, but you get the picture.

My sister is a Registered Nurse who wanted to be a stay at home mom and years ago started a Day Care Center in her home. Her husband, a Boilermaker, was often working away from home and she was the only caretaker in the home for the 6 or so kids in her care plus her own 2.

She happens to love kids.

No defined breaks and no defined lunch except as she would eat lunch with the kids.

Of course, she's not a minority, so she didn't think anything about this. It's her job to take care of the kids in her charge so she did. First kid would arrive at about 6:00 am and the last one would be picked up a little after 6:00 pm.

Yeah....with the traditional nannies, traditional cooks & traditional grounds-keepers.

What's the worse that could happen?

"They also remember Bush's stories about how the New Haven, Connecticut police always let him go, after he told them his name, when they stopped him "all the time" for driving drunk as a student at Yale in the late 1960s.

"He just struck me as a guy who really had an idea of himself as very much a child of privilege, that he wasn't operating by the same rules."

Wow I imagine there's an exemption for babysitters, because many of them are under the legal working age. But home daycare workers and nannies? Another day; another gift to the lawyers.
