Hey guys. This is my first OP. I just took a beating on some comments I just made about another movie. I just saw There's Something About Mary from start to finish, and I wanted to comment about not only the movie, but lessons learned from watching it twice.

I first saw this movie a long time ago on TV. Maybe 2001 or so. My wife and I laughed and laughed. I thought it was a great movie. Fast forward to 2022. I saw that Something About Mary was on one of those channels without commercials, so I was eager to watch and laugh again. Well, this was the theater version. I have to say, I was shocked at the vulgarity and filth of the uncut version. I had no idea the showing I saw in 2001 was heavily edited and cleaned up. It was also a lot faster paced. The reason was it skipped the filth.

For example, the movie started along well. Nice plot. The nerd helps out the addled brother and wins a prom date with the gorgeous Cameron Diaz. So far so good. But then we get 10-12 inane minutes of Stiller getting his privates caught in his zipper after masturbating while going to the bathroom when picking up the beautiful Mary. It was so silly and so drawn out and so unfunny, reminiscent of an Adam Sandler movie. You wondered what in the world happened to the great plot that had been unfolding. Meanwhile you endured the boring vulgar silliness.

There was so much bad language and sexual stuff, like with the "hair gel". It actually made the movie more tedious and not nearly as funny. LESSON: You DON'T NEED the dirty stuff. In fact movies are funnier WITHOUT the dirty stuff.

Which brings me to a broader philosophical point. Beautiful godly creations persevere while gaudy ugly evil things fall by the wayside. The great iconic movies: It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Wizard of Oz, Marty, All That Heaven Allows, all great positive films will last forever. Trashy vile filthy movies like Shampoo, Valley of the Dolls, The Heartbreak Kid, and The Last Picture Show will fade away. Christianity, my Catholic Church, all the great institutions founded by Jesus will persevere forever. The gaudy evil atheist edifices of the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, North Korea, Castro's Cuba...all will wither away and be destroyed. It works with relationships too. Hard-won relationships founded on commitment and cemented in marriage will generally stand the test of time. Frivolous sex-based cohabitations will fold up like a flimsy tent in the wind.

Sincere America-loving patriots who want the country and its families to be strong, those working for freedom, those volunteering to help the poor, the pro-life movement, Christian conservatives. They will last and prosper, even though they may face tough times. Marxist atheist groups trying to tear down this country, Antifa, BLM and their rioting and violence, leftwing politicians machinating to steal elections and keep people in a state of dependence, the abortion mills of Planned Parenthood; like the slavery proponents...they will end up on the ash heap of history

There's Something About Mary? The cleaned up version would have lasted had they gone with that. The full-length real version won't. So sad and so unnecessary.

Einhorn is Finkel. Finkel is Einhorn...Einhorn...is..a MAN!!
Funny in 1994. Funny today. But would never make it into a movie.

You're reading way too much into a giggle of a movie. It's entertainment.
It's not social awakening. It's not meant to be used as a religious wedge device..
"OH, those Hollywood Elite!!"

Point is, things change.

Hahaha

How many networks, shows, movies, and companies are you white wing snowflakes boycotting right now because of your political fetishes?

Gotta be over 100.
You kids better GET OFF MY LAWN!! :)

Seriously, it's a movie. Don't like smut???...change the channel or walk out of the movie theater.

I did..only once. The movie was "Man Trouble". Jack Nicholson and Ellen Barkin.
30 minutes into it, I was like..."WTF?" :auiqs.jpg:

I never saw the cleaned up version, that is the censored version. I though the movie had an interesting plot line and was funny at times but that's about it.

Movies that are devoid of foul language, sex, violence make nice fairly tales but have no relationship to real life. At times fairy tales are fun to watch but movies that depicted subjects such as marital problems, coming age films of teens, homosexuality, and the modern day dating and love affairs can't ignore sex still be realistic.

I do believe there is too much gratuitous sex in movies but at the same time I recognize that many films need sexual content in order to present realistic picture. I can't imagine The Last Picture Show or many other fine movies devoid of sexual content.

haha learned it from you and it is very effective especially when coming from the right.

Probably not something I would ever watch. Not a rom-com kinda guy. Although there have been good ones, but, like horror, the bad outnumber the good 20 to 1.

He was only going to the bathroom.

Again, there are many types of lifestyles in a community. Why is it necessary to always show the lowest-level vulgar segment? Who says it reflects reality any more than the clean-living folks? My family was pretty much like Leave It To Beaver. Dad worked, mom stayed home, we went to church, we didn't cuss, we didn't physically fight. nobody had affairs and nobody cohabitated. The same was true of my circle of friends. My reality was just as valid as anybody else's in my small town. And for the fifth time, the Last Picture Show didn't need to show four examples of child rape at the hands of adults. That is very few people's reality. That's Hollywood pushing a meme.

That's right. When conservatives boycott, it's not a threat, and we have more money. I hear when Roe v Wade is overturned, some corporations will refuse to do business in states that ban abortion. My response is go ahead and see what happens when millions of motivated conservatives boycott.

When the left boycotts they aren't nearly as effective. they have to involve corrupt activist judges. When the left boycotts right leaning businesses...the right goes in and supports them with business. The left doesn't do that with their businesses. When right wingers boycott...we make a dent especially on left owned businesses.

I agree, It's a Wonderful Life, Miracle on 34th Street, Wizard of Oz, Marty, All That Heaven Allows, were all great movies but those films were made 60 or 70 years ago and they reflect customs and conventions that are far different than today.

Contrary to opinions of many people, the movie business is a cut throat business that makes movies for one reason and one reason only and that is to make money. So they make movies primarily for the 18 to 24 year old movie goers who are the biggest age group buying tickets. And that age group as well as the younger group simply are not interested in seeing the kind of movies made over half century ago.

There's Something About Mary was made for 23 million and raked in 369 million at the box office. The rate of return after distribution costs was 939%. And this does not include licensing fees for streaming and broadcasting. If movie goers would pay to watch a pedophile jackoff while reading child pornography on the toilet, movie makers would give it to them.

This movie made me laugh maybe twice.

Maybe it's me, but I have yet to understand what talent Ben Stiller is alleged to have.

I agree. I have never really liked Stiller.
I mean, I have no reason to DISLIKE him. I have just never understood how he got where he is. I have never sensed a whiff of talent from him. He can't act for squat. He doesn't have any particularly good comedic timing skills. he doesn't just "look" or "sound" funny. I don't get it.

I'm not sure agree that the media is out for profit only, when it comes to the leftist agenda. Take CNN. Highly liberal content, routinely cable news' worst performer. Fox News on that other hand beats all the other cable outlets combined with its conservative content. Why does CNN continue with that model? Because of the agenda. They don't care about the ratings. They're obviously subsidized elsewhere, or they would change.

Then there is Hallmark. Squeaky clean movies that are enormously popular. Imagine. Movies featuring people attending church services. And forget the obligatory sack scene in Hollywood movies; Hallmark's first kiss doesn't happen until the 1:58 mark. True, most of its audience are women over 50, but the Network is Number One in November and December among women 18-54. This is a huge demographic. So the point is, clean DOES sell. And PC doesn't always. There's a saying "Go woke, go broke". Hopefully we'll have more and more of that.

It's not about entertainment or art. It's about making money. The Hollywood formula is to research the audience who pays for the tickets and rents the movies and push the envelope until the movie is talked about. It doesn't need a plot. In this case the target audience was probably adolescent kids who giggled all the way through it.
