There Are Now 18 House Republicans Retiring. What Does This Mean For 2020?

So what do we know about these recent retirees other than the majority of them are from safe Republican districts? Well, age could have played a role in many of these departures. Combined, these seven retirees share about 150 years of experience in the House and Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner, for instance, is the second-longest serving House member, having first been elected in 1978. But only two — King (75) and Sensenbrenner (76) — are actually older than 70. The others are still in their early-to-mid 60s, which isn’t that far off from 58, which is the average age of a congressional member in the 116th Congress. In fact, because Reps. John Shimkus of Illinois, Mac Thornberry of Texas and Greg Walden of Oregon are all still in their early 60s, the relatively young age of these retirees reinforces the idea that Republicans might have misgivings about winning back the House.

The article suggests that these retirements came about because they felt the GOP cannot win back the House in 2020. And, it’s my guess they’re Never Trumpers who know the president won’t support their reelection.

So, the question is: Will the RNC come up with viable, pro-Trump candidates for these positions? And, will they be able to beat the leftists the DNC and people like George Soros will put up to take their seats?

And, finally, will enough independents support the president to help elect his people to these and other seats?

The future of the country is going to be decided in 2020.

It means that GOPs don't expect to retake the House Majority in the 2020 election.

I think it's just the opposite. These are tired, old RINOS getting while the getting's good and leaving openings for fresh, young conservatives, many of them vets.
The issue is Repubs have been removing RINOS for several election cycles and new ones crop up.

And Lose in the election. 2018 showed that the "Party of the Rump" is in serious peril. And it's just gotten worse. Those that you call RINOS are the real republicans. YOU are the real "JBS" or better knows as "The Party of the Rump". The sooner you are gone the better. Rump isn't the problem, he's just a symptom. You don't want to work with the rest of us, fine. Just don't complain when your "The Party of the Rump" is shown the door and the Republican Party has to rebuild from the embarrassment.

Was that even in play? I don't think either party expects to win back the part of Congress they don't control. The Senate so far looks safe enough for the good guys -- It would sure be great to control the House, too, and then have two years to get some serious work done. This is a good year for the Republicans who want to retire because Trump's coattails will sweep all the replacement GOP freshmen into office easily.

trump doesn't have coattails. He also doesn't have the suburban vote anymore.

No one knows. All we have to do is look at all the polls over the past several years to realize even the so called professionals haven’t a clue. However, I wrote to the DNC some months ago telling them I had had enough and that I would never be voting for anyone with a D by their name again. Their party needs to be removed from power, too many wannabe socialists and tyrants.

Means we will find out how deep Trump's coattails are in 2020.

His coat tails showed quite a bit of wear in 2018. And after the Virus thing, I don't see it getting better.
The 2018 ripple again!

You only won because 40 something Never Trumpers had a fit and retired

You know what? You don’t know me. So you don’t know what you’re talking about.

I was a registered Democrat and voted for Carter (in retrospect, I believe that was a mistake). I have voted for independent candidates, a number of Libertarian ones (Andre Marrou was the only presidential candidate I have ever been enthusiastic about) and republican ones since the democratic wing has gone off the cliff. I was registered in Maryland as a Libertarian until this election cycle and switched to Republican because the L party did not get enough representation in the state.

You should learn the difference between knowledge and belief and stick to what you actually know.

So, your pathetic ass voted for Jimmy Carter in 1976 or 1980 and never voted Democratic since then and you consider that being a Democratic Party member?

And being libertarian just means you're a selfish bastard. Can you point to one country that has successful used that greedy economic model with any success.

I know your type.

There you go again, being an arrogant know it all and in fact knowing nothing. I was a registered Democrat for a number of years. I also voted for McGovern but Carter was the only democrat I ever voted for that won. You don’t know my type because all you know of me is a few typed comments in a forum. If you think the 2 parties we have now are that wonderful, it is you who is the pathetic ass. Crawl back under your rock and eat crow.

Meh...old machine politicians retiring after their coffers have been filled. Thanks for voting status quo, pro war, big bailout, pro zionist...just like all the others in CONgress...R and D.

Dude, Both McGovern and Carter were Democratic pols 40 years ago. The "walkaway" movement didn't start on foxie news until the 38 years later. So, in just a few comments I know that you're a liar.

regarding the libertarian party, its the party of self greed. So, I assume that your staying clear of all public infrastructure that you didn't personalty build with your money.

Duh, yeah, I’m old, like it says in my screen name. So I guess I was never young either by your moronic illogic since it was 40 years ago. So people are only ever what they are now? How can you be so obtuse? People can change, even if you can’t. THAT was the gist of the walkaway comment which apparently was beyond your understanding.

I’ll take the libertarian party over the two we have now. You can stay entrenched in your ways.

As for being a liar, you obviously wouldn’t know the truth if it smacked you across the face.

oldboilogist

You simply didn't gist a comment on the "walkaway movement", you specifically mentioned the "Walkaway" movement which foxie news pushed ahead of the Blue Wave 2018 Mid-Term elections.

Yes, people can and do change over time. You however, haven't changed in 40 years So, don't pull this "I was a Democrat" bullshit to try to prove any of your foxie news talking points.

You voted for a democrat in 1976 or 1980. Which was over FOUR DECADES ago.

Yet you wrote to the DNC some months ago?

How stupid do you think people are?

Why do you feel the need to lie? I will never understand people like you.

The DNC and democrats haven't had your vote in at least 4 decades yet you contact them to tell them you won't vote for them? Some months ago?

Didn't your parents ever tell you that when you lie people no longer believe you or pay any attention to what you say? If not, you really should read a story called The Boy Who Cried Wolf. It's written by Bob Hartman. You can get a copy on Amazon or at any bookstore.

I've been a registered Independent since 1978. I've voted a variety of parties through the decades. This year the republicans leave me no choice. I can't vote my conscience this year. trump is an outright danger to our nation and world.

Even Joe Biden would be better than trump. trump has proven himself that bad.

Blah, blah, woof, woof. Up until I wrote to them, I would have entertained voting for a democrat. I had a straw that broke the camel’s back moment and I honestly don’t even remember what it was now (probably something with firearms since I’m active with that) but I was furious when I read it and wrote them at that time.

I hate the party system; it’s the worst thing that’s happened to the U.S. political system. I have always tried to vote for the person rather than the party and I frankly couldn’t care less what you or other trolls here think. I’m going to just continue on. The libertarians come closest to representing my views but I strongly disagree with their view of corporate America as a benevolent entity. The bottom line is though, none of you know me. I’m a cat loving, atheistic, gun toting, liberalize all drugs, restore the death penalty, abortion on demand (within limits) type of person.

And to answer the question above about stupidity...
