The story of the "Two Michaels" taken hostage by China, is precisely why many like myself are outraged by the propping up of Chinas economy

Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor are two Canadian citizens who have both been taken hostage by the Communist government of China. 18 Months now they've been held, only recently charged with some trumped up spying charges, and, it's been months since they've had Canadian concierge support since China isn't allowing it. Yet again, the world SHOULD be reminded, that this is the end result of supporting these communists. Expect more of it in the future.

Canada and the West has been weak on China for so long, some far more capitulating than others. We still refuse to even acknowledge the virus as coming from China, we've made excuses for them, for the W.H.O etc. All of this, while they spy on us through Huawei and even use these businesses to break serious laws, as in the case of the allegations against Meng.

I agree, in theory we shouldn't negotiate with hostage takers, terrorists and human right abusers as a general principle. However, let's not kid ourselves, that ship has already sailed for the most part, how much trade do we do with this authoritarian state?. One of the reasons human rights is so vital to a peaceful planet, but many have turned their backs on this issue by propping up their entire operation ourselves! We should talk to our U.S counterparts and consider alternative repercussions for any nation that engages in this, including, but not limited to, banning Huawei from operating in Canada.

We tell the world, "we refuse to negotiate with terrorists, but, we will ship trillions of dollars and millions of jobs to you!"' That, is in essence, what the West has done. Like it or love it, that's a fact. We then act surprised when that same Communist state expands their military and physical outreach, steals, spies and hurts our allies, and now, takes our citizens for leverage. It's the primary reason some of us have supported Trumps policies, he's the only one confronting China and Western challenges.

Even as we battle the communists hostage situation those former politicians who wrote the letter to Trudeau asking him to release Meng (from all political stripes) have done Canada a major disservice. This isn't something that should play out in public, all these Canadians did was weaken Canadas hand and in fact, put the two Canadian hostages in more peril as far as I am concerned.

In the end, there is no ideal choice, it's going to be lose/lose for everyone. What Canada and the world desperately needs, are global leaders speaking out strongly against this hostage taking to ensure the communists lose more. Since they have rarely done so in the past, ironically now Canada stands alone fighting this monster (some U.S politicians and Pompeo have spoken out, but very few globally have). A monster that we helped create and protect.
