ORAN, Algeria — AFTER Tahrir came Cologne. After the square came sex. The Arab revolutions of 2011 aroused enthusiasm at first, but passions have since waned. Those movements have come to look imperfect, even ugly: For one thing, they have failed to touch ideas, culture, religion or social norms, especially the norms relating to sex. Revolution doesn’t mean modernity.

The attacks on Western women by Arab migrants in Cologne, Germany, on New Year’s Eve evoked the harassment of women in Tahrir Square itself during the heady days of the Egyptian revolution. The reminder has led people in the West to realize that one of the great miseries plaguing much of the so-called Arab world, and the Muslim world more generally, is its sick relationship with women. In some places, women are veiled, stoned and killed; at a minimum, they are blamed for sowing disorder in the ideal society. In response, some European countries have taken to producing guides of good conduct to refugees and migrants.

Sex is a complex taboo, arising, in places like Algeria, Tunisia, Syria or Yemen, out of the ambient conservatism’s patriarchal culture, the Islamists’ new, rigorist codes and the discreet puritanism of the region’s various socialisms. That makes a good combination for obstructing desire or guilt-tripping and marginalizing those who feel any. And it’s a far cry from the delicious licentiousness of the writings of the Muslim golden age, like Sheikh Nafzawi’s “The Perfumed Garden of Sensual Delight,” which tackled eroticism and the Kama Sutra without any hang-ups.

This Moroccan immigrant to Italy seems pretty comfortable with sex.
Karima El Mahroug was one of Berlusconi's girlfriends.

You sure they're not Southern Baptists?

Has anyone seen a group of Southern Baptists setting forth on women like we have read about in Cologne? Why not Google Muslim Men raping across Europe and see what comes up. If you come up with Southern Baptist men raping across the U.S., I will apologize to you.

I am sure there are other Moroccans like her. A friend of mine in New York had a Moroccan boyfriend for years and he never told her that he was married. Eventually the truth came out, but they remained friends. However, the Muslim men that his two daughters dated treated her terribly so they ended up marrying Christian men, and he is happy now playing Grandpa.

I didn't know Bill Clinton was a Southern Baptist
I'm sure I saw photos of him with a big bible in campaign season going into church. Anyway, it's not like Methodists are angels either.

Still, it is generous of Sally to be concerned about the beam in her neighbour's eye.

When the Duggar males go raping en masse like the Muslims are raping throughout Europe, get back to me.
How many women does it take for it to be 'en masse'? I thought Duggar put up quite an effort for one guy.

Will the Tailhook crowd do for 'en masse'?

What silly, childish men. One would think they were in a coma as to what is happening in Europe. If they want to discuss American men on this subject, I am sure there is a forum for thst.. Meanwhile, if this article disturbs them so much that they felt they had to drag in people of other religions, I am sure a Letter to the Editor of the New York Times would suffice for both of you giving your opinion.. This way the readers of the Times, while reading their morning paper over a cup of coffee, can get a good laugh.
For those who are comatose.........

I haven't heard of such things but they are still very . . . sexually repressed IMO.

Just because you were born and/or raised in a certain religion doesn't mean that you are actively practicing. I'm pretty sure that sex out of wedlock is considered a sin in the Abrahamic religions.

Religions are very patriarchal where women have their "roles" and their places. I'm pretty sure we are all aware of this.
I think in Jewish communities often it is more Matriachal,Chris......often the women are very motivated, strong and keep the family(which is of such importance)together, tell me if this is wrong......My Mom at 29 was widowed with a young family,it was great for us,mind you we were good respectful kids......I value women very highly indeed.....my Mom 11 years later married a lovely Guy,who infact took over my Pops job after he died.......but my Mom only found this out after 3 months courting(such a nice expression)..steven
