The Scandinavian political spectrum in graphics

I saw this in our major newspaper yesterday and thought posters might find it interesting, too.

The vertical axis runs from Social Conservatism at the top to Social Liberalism at the bottom, and from Left Wing economics on the left to right wing economics on the right. Each candidate was asked 30 questions, and the results calculated from that. Th graph also shows the positions of some key figures in the parties.

This really shows the range of choices available to Finnish voters in our municipal elections next week, and also shows the range of attitudes within some parties.

What this shows most clearly is that there really is daylight between the economic policies of the Left Alliance (red) and National Coalition Party (dark blue), and between the social policies of the True Finns (turquoise) and Greens (light green).

Interesting! There seem to be a number of candidates out-of-line with their own parties. Finnish RINOS?!?!

Ir happens a lot here, and no one can really explain it. It seems people can basically join whatever party they want, and within reason hold quite different attitudes.

It makes choosing a candidate tough, because they don't necesarily vote on party lines - particularly at the level of municipal elections.
