The Republican attempt to Make Slavery a Constitutional Right

Many "Republicans" in this forum are truly dishonest people.

The Corwin Amendment

The Corwin Amendment, also called the “Slavery Amendment,” was a constitutional amendment passed by Congress in 1861 but never ratified by the states that would have banned the federal government from abolishing the institution of slavery in the states where it existed at the time. Considering it a last-ditch effort to prevent the looming Civil War, supporters of the Corwin Amendment hoped it would prevent the southern states that had not already done so from seceding from the Union. Ironically, Abraham Lincoln did not oppose the measure.

The operative section of the Corwin Amendment states:

“No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State.” Edited

In referring to enslavement as “domestic institutions” and “persons held to labor or service,” rather than by the specific word “slavery,” the amendment reflects wording in the draft of the Constitution considered by delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, which referred to enslaved people as “Person held to Service."

Senator William H. Seward and Representative Thomas Corwin introduced the Corwin Amendment, both were republicans. Edited, red is reserved for moderator's action on the open board.

That was a failed and desperate attempt to appease the Democrat Slavers, who were supposed to end Slavery back in 1820 which was agreed to in 1788.

This is what Democrats do. They lie and kick the can down the street. Just like they have done with Slavery and Emancipation. The Dems are Oppressive and Abhorrent, passing all sorts of Ungodly rules and regulations in the Democrat South. Segregation (Biden is a Segregationist btw) Jim Crow, Poll Taxes, Litteracy Tests, KKK on and on and on. In 1964 All Southern Democrat states flew the Confederate Flag over their capitals as a protest to The Republican Civil Rights Act.

But let's back up a little more. How do you explain The Emancipation Proclamation, the And all The Civil Rights Bills for Black Americans the Republican party tried to pass from 1864-1964 that Democrats opposed? T

Worse yet, how do you explain Democrats opposition to basic Human Freedoms and Human Rights over the years?

The Republicans put forth ANTI-Lynching Bills every years since 1890 and Democrats opposed those every single time until they were unable to stop the following bill from being passed in 2019.

How do you explain that?

How do you explain The Democrat Logo? Andrew Jackson's Mule was used to hang Native Americans and Runaway Slaves on. There is no more racist symbol than The Democrat Jackass.

Did You Hear that RIGHT? The Democrats have not changed a bit. They were born in slavery and oppression, and they will die promoting slavery and oppression.
Nobody takes right wingers seriously about being moral enough to bear True Witness.

Passed the House of Representatives February 26, 2020.

The republicans control the Senate. Why did it not pass in the Senate?

Lincoln is credited with "saving the Union" but the Union fell apart under his watch.

The first states seceded BEFORE Lincoln ever took office. For that matter the South Carolinians fired on a ship sent by President Buchanan to resupply Fort Sumter.

This was 160 years ago. Since then, Democrats were the party of segregation, Jim Crow, the KKK, lynching, cross burning. But none of that matters to you because government handouts.

You're a trashy prostitute
The South used to vote democrat. Lincoln was the republican. Only the clueless and Causeless right wing appeal to ignorance and allege they are Right simply because they are on the right wing.
We aren’t talking about the same republucan and democratic parties in the 1800s .
The Gop has change in the past two decades from a party of science to a party delusional money and power grabbers.
And there used to be fairly conservative democrats.
There still are. Progressive democrats that believe in AGW, want gov healthcare and universal background checks are with the rest of the free world and the MAJORITY OF citizens in the United States of America.
What’s more mainstream then that. Heck, polled Repos want universal back ground checks and some form of universal healthcare. It’s laughable. The repugs on the right are archaic and a minority under informed dinosaur.
You conflate mainstream with conservative? Interesting. Where do you put liberal?
you’re having trouble reading ?
Liberal agenda including AGW, universal healthcare and background checks.....are main stream. Avoiding recessions is a mainstream agenda. Liberal budgets all reduced the deficits over time. They are all, mainstream. Conservative budgets aren’t as trickle down has never worked...
So where are the conservative democrats? You said they were there. Are any holding elective office?
You ‘re conflating conservatives with mainstream. Conservatives are not mainstream. Conservatives are RADICAL. There are no polls anywhere that show the majority are with them on ALL the major issues. That’s why they have become an apartheid minority political group that wins national elections by cheating.
You didn't identify any conservative democrats. Remember, you said they are there.
Quote me. where did I ever use the phrase “ conservative dems. “
Are you being serious?

My quote: And there used to be fairly conservative democrats.
Your quote: There still are.
That’s because there are just democrats. They all believe in the same basic things with little difference. The idea that labels like conservative and progressive are much different, is false. It’s laughable. EVERY democrat is at odds with nearly every republican position on all major issues. Healthcare, what’s the difference between Medicare for all and public option where the option is....Medicare. Even those in Medicare now are Free to buy private insurance. Go ahead. Pick a policy and tell me how different the Dems are internally from each other. Do it. AGW, universal back ground check, women's choice......go for it.
The gop is out of touch with reality.
You said there are conservative democrats, then proceeded to explain how there aren't any. As far as democrats being in lockstep, they most certainly are. Diversity of thought is NOT a value democrats champion.
Guess you struggled reading your own post.

You said there are conservative democrats
Never said any such thing, never. You’ve yet to post it. While
you're the one using that label I’m just pulling your chain and you’re biting.

This OP might just be the dumbest OP ever posted on this board. Obviously, the author is a high school or college student who just began to study American history and who knows nothing about the context of the Corwin Amendment.

First of all, most of the Senators and Representatives who voted FOR the Corwin Amendment were DEMOCRATS, while most of those who voted AGAINST the amendment were REPUBLICANS. A DEMOCRAT was president at the time, James Buchanan, and he SUPPORTED the amendment. In fact, Buchanan signed the amendment, even though his signature was not required.

Furthermore, the Corwin Amendment would NOT have prevented a slave state from abolishing slavery because the amendment only applied to the federal government.

The bill was crafted by republicans, that's my point. Lincoln supported the Amendment also. But this is not the only time republicans supported racism. The fact remains and history proves it, that republicans were complicit in past racism and today it is the party of racists.

There is no irony that Lincoln did not oppose the measure, he was in fact a racist and acknowledged the constitutionality of slavery in his first inaugural address.

Says the lefty that can't give credit to the old white man that ended slavery.

Dagosa, things that will solve AGW: Universal minimum income, single payer medical coverage, mail in voting, open borders.
So you’re admitting that AGW IS REAL, that fossil full pollution contributes to accelerated global warming.

There's no way to get that out of what I said.

You do not believe in AGW, that's what the facts prove

You don't believe in AGW. There are two things we could do today that would dramatically decrease emissions and you oppose them both. Nuclear power and fracking for natural gas to replace coal plants.
What a stupid thing to say. You have no quotes to say that. You’re just making up shit because you have way too much free time on your hands.

You can't factually dispute what I said because it's true and you're a cardboard cut out

You've well proven you believe AGW is a crock of shit.

No one has the right to reach into someone else's pocket to pay their bills and government should treat all citizens the same. Robbing from some to give to others clearly is not the same.

And how does keeping guns from honest citizens keep them from criminals? You never did explain that

You could argue Manchin, but it's hard to argue someone who votes for what he does is genuinely conservative.

It was crafted by a few Republicans who were trying to appease the Deep South's unfounded concerns over slavery's continued existence, and the amendment would not have prevented any slave state from abolishing slavery; it merely would have prevented the federal government from doing so, and there was no credible chance that the federal government would have attempted any such thing for decades.

And I repeat the fact that most of the Senators and Reps who voted against the amendment were Republicans, and that most of those voted for it were Democrats.

Yes, Lincoln supported the amendment as a compromise measure to keep the Upper South from leaving the Union, but he refused to budge on the issue of allowing slavery to expand into the western territories, whereas most Democrats were pushing for this.

The amendment never would have even been proposed if the South had been clamoring for the extension of slavery into the territories and for the repeal of Northern personal liberty laws that forbade the surrender of runaway slaves to slave catchers.

First you lead with Republicans are dishonest people, and right away I know you're projecting right.

But then you go onto validate my first instinct by blaming Republicans for slavery when you know very well it was YOUR party of preference that made slavery part of their daily lives. And that's ironic, because today PROGS make racism part of their daily lives.

The party of slavery only changed tactics. Tell blacks again how they're victims and should be pitied. Show them how families aren't important because welfare is an adequate replacement aimed to keep blacks in their place. Give blacks another reason to destroy their own communities. That's your Demonicrats in a nutshell.
Republicans introduced this amendment and it would have made slavery a constitutional right. Just face the truth. Your last paragraph is a joke since the majority of every form of welfare has gone to whites.
No, you damn liar. They put forth a re-worded amendment.
BS.
My question to you is.. what do we do with black people? You are letting democrats destroy your community, than you vote for them. What do we do with suck a low iq base?

Republicans introduced this amendment and it would have made slavery a constitutional right. Just face the truth. Your last paragraph is a joke since the majority of every form of welfare has gone to whites.
No, you damn liar. They put forth a re-worded amendment.
BS.
My question to you is.. what do we do with black people? You are letting democrats destroy your community, than you vote for them. What do we do with suck a low iq base?
They’re human beings and legal citizens of the United States. You don’t “ do anything” with them. It’s their choice. They deserve the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.
But they’re not voting for opportunity they’re voting for slavery why not just give it to them here’s money work here’s a house work here is healthcare work. And he’s a whip if you don’t wanna work.. Give them what they want

“No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State.”
