The Corwin Amendment

The Corwin Amendment, also called the “Slavery Amendment,” was a constitutional amendment passed by Congress in 1861 but never ratified by the states that would have banned the federal government from abolishing the institution of slavery in the states where it existed at the time. Considering it a last-ditch effort to prevent the looming Civil War, supporters of the Corwin Amendment hoped it would prevent the southern states that had not already done so from seceding from the Union. Ironically, Abraham Lincoln did not oppose the measure.

The operative section of the Corwin Amendment states:

“No amendment shall be made to the Constitution which will authorize or give to Congress the power to abolish or interfere, within any State, with the domestic institutions thereof, including that of persons held to labor or service by the laws of said State.” Edited

In referring to enslavement as “domestic institutions” and “persons held to labor or service,” rather than by the specific word “slavery,” the amendment reflects wording in the draft of the Constitution considered by delegates to the Constitutional Convention of 1787, which referred to enslaved people as “Person held to Service."

Senator William H. Seward and Representative Thomas Corwin introduced the Corwin Amendment, both were republicans. Edited, red is reserved for moderator's action on the open board.

Lots of effort was put into stopping wars at the expense of slaves. The only guy of that age and before who actually gave a flying fuck about stopping the practice was Thomas Jefferson.

1861?

Snowflake, do you know how LONG ago that was? Do you know what YEAR it is NOW?

DEMOCRATS were the Party of Slavery, started the KKK, the Party of Jim Crowe, was the party of Segregation, is the party that uses 'Racism' as a weapon to keep the country divided (very Saul Alensky of them), and is still the party of the policies of 'Economic Slavery'.

President Trump has done more for blacks in the last 4 years than Democrats have since 1861.

Democrats attempt to push for rights. But they do not want anyone to go mainstream. They must stay locked up in a certain way. Democrats won these things. They also corrupt the things they won. African Americans need to go mainstream at a higher percentage. But I can not tell them what to do. They and you need to make your own decisions. Change needs to happen. You will find the Prog agenda of Socialism/Marxism will make changes that are not to nice.

It was a last ditch effort to placate the leaving States, and the one part about it being un-amendable probably wouldn't work, because an amendment by its nature overrides anything else in the document, including other amendments.

An odd thread since back in 1861, the Republicans were progressive liberals.
They did not change into conservative, wealthy, elite until long after the Civil war was over and Lincoln was dead.

You do realize that the Union preceded the Republican Party and the confederacy preceded the Democrat Party?

And you’re going to go back to the civil war era to try to lecture people that Republicans fought to keep slavery, when it were the Union (Republicans) who fought to free the slaves.

What a jackass

Right wingers are all about moral Talk not moral Action. Jefferson was a prime example.

Why was there no effort to use eminent domain to end slavery in a market friendly manner? There was no need for right wingers to be traitors and levy War against the Union, like gun lovers with without clue and without Cause, are wont to do.

True-----the Union did precede the Republican party and Lincoln was a Republican-------but it is not clear to me that the Democrat party "happened" after the southern confederacy------I kinda thought that there
as already a "democrat" party in the North ???

Democrats had in their party platform at that time support for slavery, lying racist sack of shit.

This was 160 years ago. Since then, Democrats were the party of segregation, Jim Crow, the KKK, lynching, cross burning. But none of that matters to you because government handouts.

You're a trashy prostitute

First you lead with Republicans are dishonest people, and right away I know you're projecting right.

But then you go onto validate my first instinct by blaming Republicans for slavery when you know very well it was YOUR party of preference that made slavery part of their daily lives. And that's ironic, because today PROGS make racism part of their daily lives.

The party of slavery only changed tactics. Tell blacks again how they're victims and should be pitied. Show them how families aren't important because welfare is an adequate replacement aimed to keep blacks in their place. Give blacks another reason to destroy their own communities. That's your Demonicrats in a nutshell.

Are you still frightened that Republicans are going to pass a new Amendment to make slavery legal?

No law needs to be passed to make slavery legal, enough people in this country are willing to be slaves and do the bidding of their masters. Blacks are the slaves of the Democratic Party. They do their bidding and the snap of their fingers.

The Dems play a video of a dumb black criminal high on drugs fighting with a cop getting beat down or justifiably killed, and you do exactly as they want, you protest, riot, burn small businesses, and terrorize their political opposition. In the end many of the blacks doing all this end up going to prison for their crimes during their riot spree, while the white liberals laugh and make money off it.

They gain their political power and use it to make black neighborhoods even more unsafe, defunding police, which in turn sees skyrocketing crime rates in black neighborhoods. Businesses flee the black neighborhoods and that means no good jobs nearby. This increases poverty in that area and more perpetual and systemic misery. More unemployment, more drug use, more crime, more gang violence, more blacks in prison.

Meanwhile Republicans would rather see blacks be law abiding citizens, have jobs, pay taxes, not do drugs, open their own businesses, and not be a burden on taxpayers. Oh my, how evil.
