The PA Governor is asking PA residents to wear masks

I am a life-long Pennsylvanian, and I don't particularly like Governor Wolf, but so what?

His directive was quite clear, however, I interpret it in my own way.

(a) Stay at home, and
(b) Wear a mask when you go out.

So, I go out whenever I feel like it...mainly to get food, drugs, and to exercise (walk, hike, bike). Sometimes I go out just for a ride in my car or motorcycle. But when I go somewhere where I will necessarily be in close proximity with other humans, I wear a mask.

And I consider myself to be in compliance with the Governor's directives.
I don't think masks have much effectiveness in protecting you from others as there is too much air leakage around the edge. The main point in wearing a mask is to catch the aerosol coming out of your mouth if you cough or sneeze. If you don't cough or sneeze or aren't infected, then there is little real point in wearing the mask.

And if the 6' rule helps, why the mask? And if the mask, why the 6' rule? And if these things are really so important, then why weren't they implemented a month ago BEFORE the infection rate was high? It might have kept it from getting so. And they could have set a date and central places where you could get one rather than just announced it and left it up to people to now try to pull one out of their ass now that they are hard to find!

Is this the best our "leadership" can do for us???

Besides, it all kind of a joke anyway-- -- -- anyone with half a brain knows that if someone coughs your way and the aerosol gets in your eye or you touch something then later rub your eye or nose, etc., you'll pick up some virus anyway.

There have been a couple of studies recently regarding how the virus may travel. One from MIT said that 6 feet isn't a long enough distance; that someone sneezing might send particles as far as 27 feet. The other, I can't remember where it was done, said that the virus may be spread through talking, possibly even just breathing.

There still seems to be a good deal of uncertainty regarding the COVID-19 virus and how it spreads. So, we see these sorts of protective recommendations in the hopes they may help. :dunno:

Man in Malibu was arrested for paddle boarding on the pacific ocean in violation of The Corona Virus pandemic order. No telling what could happen if we transmit to the dolphins.

Well, I have to hand it to her. She IS relentless. Though the sands of time have not been kind.

Yeah, so wearing any fabric mask obviously limits that potential spread and most don't even know they're carriers for weeks. Wear a mask wherever you may be putting others at risk and wash your hands with soap. A rag torn from an old T-shirt beats nothing. Don't be crass, save a loved one's ass.

Bottom line: I said this before and got flack for it, that the virus must then also be airborne and you can pick it up just being outside, how else could it spread so widely and quickly, and if I was out somewhere and someone started coughing or sneezing, I'd naturally move away from them anyway.

That's fine for most people but what about people with respiratory problems who need air and can't tolerate having a hot, confining thing covering their face further restricting their air as they struggle to make their way around a store trying to get food?

It's all about political posturing and CYA. You can bet your ass that the governor and his staff don't wear masks. The lame suggestion is aimed at Walmart shoppers.

The first study wasn't about this virus specifically, but rather that droplets can travel up to 27 feet, so that anything carried in droplets might go that far. The second wasn't saying the virus is airborne, but rather undergoes aerosolization.

A mask only does good if the wearer is sick. Otherwise a mask is useless except for one thing. It lets you feel like you are doing something and in control.

  • If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.
