The whole concept of anticipation is centered around waiting. As you are waiting for something, you are thinking about it, and particularly if the thing you are waiting for is something you perceive as pleasant, the anticipation period itself can deliver feelings of joy. Studies have actually been done that directly correlate the level of anticipation to increased levels of happiness.

In todays on demand world, we are destroying anticipation. Just about every book, movie, and audio recording made over the last 50 years is available at our fingertips online. The anticipation of the big game is dulled by the video recording. All the excitement of cliff hangers is being destroyed by binge-watching as is the anticipation of new movies being released to streaming services instead of movie theaters.

We need to bring back the excitement and pleasure of anticipation back into our lives. During Christmas we remove the anticipation and excitement by asking the kids and adults what they want for Christmas so just about everyone knows what gifts they are going to receive. When I was a kid, my dad was paid monthly and every payday he planned a surprise for the family.
