They dont call them lies or mis-speaking, they just call them false statements.
Whether its a lie or mis-spoke depends on intent. Determining intent is a separate issue from whether something is objectively true or false.

I think he wants to act neutral in hopes to gain insight into how a Republican or conservative thinks in order to counter it somehow, but it's a sly game that is played or else he wouldn't be attacking conservatives or Republican's, and then claiming neutrality like he does once challenged on his views, and especially if such views are big time wrong.
