The Great New England Quake of 2012

But I'm surprised you felt that as far as Boston. The USGS interactive map shows the earthquake located closer to Portland ME than Boston MA, a 4.0 on the Richter scale at 7:12 pm your time.

I'm not on the East Coast, but I study earthquakes and seismic activity worldwide as a hobby.

Then you shouldn't be all that surprised.

The cooler rocks on this portion of the plate enable seismic activity to travel much farther than on the west coast, almost 4 times the distance. It was reported being felt in Brooklyn, NY, which is more than 300 miles to my west.

The DC quake that occurred a year or two ago made skyscrapers in Boston wobble slightly.

Anyone else in NE feel it last night around 7pm?

I did, just a little. I'm about 150 miles south of the epicenter. Sure it was just a 4.0, but around here that's significant.

you should try a 6.7......quite invigorating....

I was in San Diego in 2010 when a 7.2 hit on the border about 90 miles from me...they say what hit SD was about equal to a low 6, definitely enough to have the shit scared out of me.

It lasted so long I began to wonder if it would stop.

We've had a few of them here in NW Ohio. I've heard we live on some sort of fault line.

They are strange, you feel the quake and it does seem like it isn't going to stop. Things are shaking sideways. Once we had one and I could hear a loud sound like someone ran their car into our house.

It felt like the washing machine was WAY out of balance...I was confused for the first second or two then realized what was happening.

i know what you mean Bob.....i was on the route in the Anaheim Hills when about a 4.5er hit Yorba Linda....i was getting out of the LLV when it hit and it knocked me right back into the seat.....it felt like a 6er but i found out i was only 10 miles from the Epicenter....can you imagine what it must be like to some of those people in the world who live 20-30 miles from the Epicenter of some of these 7 pointers?......WoW.....

We live in central New Hampshire, and we got a real good jolt that lasted about 10 seconds.

I thought that an 18-wheeler was lumbering down our country road, and then all of a sudden the whole house shook for about 3-4 seconds.

I was concerned enough to go down to the basement to check the foundation.

Earthquake near Whitesburg rattles parts of 8 states
November 10, 2012 - A 4.3-magnitude earthquake struck outside Whitesburg shortly after noon Saturday, with reverberations felt through Eastern and Central Kentucky and at least seven other states.
The epicenter was eight miles west of Whitesburg and was centered about .7 miles deep, according to the National Weather Service in Jackson. The U.S. Geological Service confirmed the quake's time as 12:08 p.m. WKYT-TV chief meteorologist Chris Bailey said the earthquake was the strongest in Kentucky since a 5.2 quake that hit Bath County in 1980. The USGS reported that it was felt in West Virginia, Tennessee, Ohio, North Carolina, Georgia, Indiana and South Carolina. But the most dramatic effects were in Eastern Kentucky.

Craig Dixon, a Letcher County miner, lives in the small community of Sycamore Loop, about 2 miles from the epicenter. "I was sitting at home, on my computer, my wife was feeding the dogs, when it sounded like a 747 was crashing into the house," said Dixon, 48. "Everything in the house started shaking and rattling for about 15 seconds." The "weirdest sight," Dixon said, was "the hundreds of spiders and bugs that came out of the ground and started climbing on the outside of the house." The Dixon house experienced no damage, he said, but some of his neighbors told him there were cracks in the foundations of their homes. "It seemed like people higher up on the mountains got more vibration than we did," he said. Dixon said he has heard hundreds of coal-mining blasts in his job, "but nothing like what I heard today. It was scary enough, but it would have been even more terrifying if it had been in the middle of the night."

Will Nash of Teach for America was in Prestonsburg conducting professional development training with a group of 25 teachers. "Felt it in the library as ceiling fans and books shook," he wrote on Twitter. Lt. Ken Sexton of the Whitesburg Fire Department said officials in Letcher County were trying to assess damage, but they had not received any reports of injuries. Dispatcher Barbara Brashear of Perry County emergency services in Hazard said there had been two reports of property damage so far, but no injuries. "We have reports of a lot of pictures falling off the wall," she said. "We've been told it was felt as far up as Cincinnati and as far south as Georgia."

The state police post in Hazard covers five counties: Perry, Letcher, Knott, Leslie, Perry and Breathitt. Dispatcher Ryan Adams said there were no injuries or structural-damage reports, but "we're getting reports from all across the region of people's pictures being knocked off the wall, and ceramic figurines being broken," he said. Tom Monarch was on the second floor of his home in Lexington's Chevy Chase neighborhood when he felt a vibration like an "unbalanced washing machine." "It sustained for a little over 30 seconds," he said, but it reminded him of the 1980 earthquake, when he was a child in Frankfort. "It kept vibrating, and then it tapered off." About 3 p.m., Bailey reported that aftershocks of 2.2 and 2.3 magnitude had been reported near the epicenter of the original quake.

Last significant quake we felt in Portland, Oregon, I was working. Had just replaced a hydraulic hose, and was headed back to the shop to clean up my tools. The ground vibrated and shook, and there was a rumbling sound.

My first thought was "Damn, what the hell have they done to the 4-Hi now?!!". Then the mill got quiet, and they announced over the intercom that we had just had a quake, and would the millwrights and electricians start checking areas for damage.

Fortunately, there was no damage.

My brother was directing traffic at a construction site in Olympia, Washington, and was directly over the epicenter. It got bad enough he finally just sat down, as he was sure that the ground movement was going to knock him off his feet. Directly across from him, there was a store with a very large display window. He was totally amazed at how far glass can flex without breaking.

Ye, we noticed it do here by 495 - but it wasn't bad, a lot like a heavy truck going past. The cat was freaking out before the shaking started, and wouldn't leave my side for a while after.....
