It is not what either party calls itself but what actually is. Definition of Centrist is well established and those that call it something else, are not centrists but extremists.

The ends of the spectrum hate moderates and independents more than they hate the other tribe. So they have to pretend that moderates and independents are actually IN the other tribe.
