Sitting locked up by order of the authorities even in case of a real threat to one's health is possible for a very short time. And if we are talking about the coronavirus, the threat of which seems too exaggerated to many people, then the same is true. Therefore, the events that unfolded on Wednesday night in Belgrade should teach officials in many countries of the world that they should not overstep the limits.
On Wednesday night, riots broke out in central Belgrade, during which demonstrators briefly stormed the Serbian parliament building.
Protesters began to gather in the square in front of the Parliament shortly after President Aleksandar Vucic announced that a new coronavirus outbreak would result in a curfew over the next weekend.
According to the police, about 5 thousand people took part in the protest action, while a small group of protesters - about 100-200 people - began to behave aggressively and came into confrontation with the police. Police officers used tear gas and rubber truncheons. The demonstrators threw stones at them and set police cars on fire.
According to Belgrade police chief Vladimir Rebić, at least 60 people, including 43 police officers, were injured in the clashes. Five police vehicles were burned and three police horses were injured. Twenty-three people were detained.
The protesters threw burning tyres at the police and demanded the resignaion of President Aleksandar Vucic. Around 2 a.m., special forces and riding police managed to dispel the crowd, but tensions remain to this day.
