While it is true that all other things being equal Obama will hand the Republicans a land slide in 2016 and that is because it will be difficult to get through the next 19 months without another percieved blunder in:

Foreign relations

The Financial markets

Or Race Relations

This perception of Obama doing something so stupid that it is ranked with the Iran hostage crisis or meltdown does not take action on his part, he is scapegoat in chief.

The upside of losing the presidency in 2016 for Republicans particularly in a squeaker like 2000 is no coattails for the winner and greater strength at the state levels in 2018 as the new scapegoat in chief makes enemies and gets blamed for problems that are caused in Brussels, Moscow, Beijing or wherever.

What is your opinion?

already hedging your bets?

do you really think that it'll be the president that does something to hand republicans a victory, or will republicans fail in the legislature and swing the pendulum back the other direction? i mean it's not like they're off to the greatest of starts

The downside?

If they act like the far left if they gain the executive branch.

The first few days the new (R) congress acted like the far left when dealing with the Ominous bill.

If they do not act like the far left, then things could look up.

However that is a lot of wishful thinking.

The down side will be if the GOP will favor the rich at the expense of the middle class again.

The upside will be its acceptance of marriage equality and regulated abortion generally, which will put the issues to rest for good while broadening the GOP base.

I cant see any downside to a GOP presidential victory, given the alternatives.
The main downside would be people like you not being able to play the oppressed victim of big government liberal tyranny anymore and you will have to start defending big government republican tyranny.
