McCain will go to debate
By POLITICO STAFF | 9/26/08 11:27 AM EDT Text Size:

Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) announces: "The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the senator will travel to the debate this afternoon. Following the debate, he will return to Washington to ensure that all voices and interests are represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners.

The text of a statement from his camapign at about 11:20 a.m. Eastern:

John McCain’s decision to suspend his campaign was made in the hopes that politics could be set aside to address our economic crisis.

In response, Americans saw a familiar spectacle in Washington. At a moment of crisis that threatened the economic security of American families, Washington played the blame game rather than work together to find a solution that would avert a collapse of financial markets without squandering hundreds of billions of taxpayers’ money to bailout bankers and brokers who bet their fortunes on unsafe lending practices.

Both parties in both houses of Congress and the administration needed to come together to find a solution that would deserve the trust of the American people. And while there were attempts to do that, much of yesterday was spent fighting over who would get the credit for a deal and who would get the blame for failure. There was no deal or offer yesterday that had a majority of support in Congress. There was no deal yesterday that included adequate protections for the taxpayers. It is not enough to cut deals behind closed doors and then try to force it on the rest of Congress — especially when it amounts to thousands of dollars for every American family.

The difference between Barack Obama and John McCain was apparent during the White House meeting yesterday, where Barack Obama’s priority was political posturing in his opening monologue defending the package as it stands. John McCain listened to all sides so he could help focus the debate on finding a bipartisan resolution that is in the interest of taxpayers and homeowners. The Democratic interests stood together in opposition to an agreement that would accommodate additional taxpayer protections.

Senator McCain has spent the morning talking to members of the administration, members of the Senate, and members of the House. He is optimistic that there has been significant progress toward a bipartisan agreement now that there is a framework for all parties to be represented in negotiations, including Representative Blunt as a designated negotiator for House Republicans. The McCain campaign is resuming all activities and the senator will travel to the debate this afternoon. Following the debate, he will return to Washington to ensure that all voices and interests are represented in the final agreement, especially those of taxpayers and homeowners.

Is his campaign kidding??? lol... this part particularly made me laugh.

John McCain is the biggest liar on the planet. He was for Roe vs Wade in 2000, now he is against it. He was against the Bush tax cuts, now he is for them. He said the war in Iraq would be rapped up quickly, then he said he warned that it would take a long time. He was for the bailout of AIG, then he was against it. He said the fundamentals of the economy were strong, then he said the economy was at risk. He was against having a debate, now he wants to have one.

The man is unprincipled. He will say anything to get elected.

And, of course, you have to repeat the mantra in every single thread.

Aren't all politicians like this? LOL

Talk about politica posturing? McCain announces he'll suspend his campaign UNTIL a deal is reached yet his campaign was out in full force yesterday with his surrogates working overtime on the news channels to paint McCain as being the stand up guy only worried about the country...Campaign ads continued to run.... donations were still be accepted...

then yesterday, before McCain got there, it looked like they had a deal...he arrives and it turns to shit...

McCain says he won't debate without a deal either yet there is no deal and guess what, he's going to debate because he KNOWS if he doesn't he'll look like a complete and utter FOOL!

Obama is the one who looks Presidential in this entire mess... He hasn't made ridiculous, knee-jerk comments that need to be "clarified" later, he hasn't called for foolish action such as firing the SEC chairman (and the FEC chairman too), he made no public comment on the bailout until he'd had a chance to review it and speak with his advisors on it... McCain hadn't even READ it as of Tuesday!

Senator McCain wanted the debate in every headline, leading every news program and on everyones mind. I think John McCain is confident he will be eating Barack Obama's lunch at the debate tonight.

I'm not saying McCain is going to eat Obama's lunch, I'm saying that McCain is going to go for a first round knock-out tonight, and he wants everyone to watch.

He'll be eating Obama's SACK LUNCH tonight. Big difference. And, I'm pretty sure the "everyone" in your post have had to reevaluate their opinions after the feeble attempt to run from the debate late this week.

after the feeble attempt to run from the debate late this week.

I doubt you believe that. McCain is the townhall king. He has more unscripted Q&A experience than any other serving politician. I firmly believe he has no fear whatsoever of this debate. In fact, it is just the opposite, he is so confident in his abilities he wants as large an audience as possible.

As an additional advantage, McCain has manuevered you all into this "John McCain is running scared" talking point, which lowers expectation going into the debate.

Historically, the non-politically inclined watch the last debate, not the first. John McCain has denied Barack Obama any practice runs. Everyone will be watching tonight. Plus, this debate is national security, John McCain's strong suit.

I think McCain has put Obama in as bad a situation, debate wise, as he possibly could, I don't think there is any denying it.

McCain is dancing around like a monkey. He can't make a statement and stick to his guns. It's obvious, with polls showing that 3/4 of the country want the debate to happen that he is abandoning his grandstanding and going to the debate.

Mission: Fail

If Mccain was such a political bad ass he would not have required Palin to invigorate his slumped, dead in the water campaign. My earliest post on Mccain missing the debate HINGED on if he could produce a solution to the crisis at hand. That has yet to be the case. Now, it looks like he was trying to run but has been marched back to face the firing line since he's decided to attend. This is not a town hall debate. Having to Craft the environment that suits Mccain is not an impressive feature of his campaign. Im just saying.. the dude is going to be trounced tonight.

People change. I've changed. I used to be for the death penalty, now I'm against it.

And the fundamentals of the economy are strong. You just have to understand English to know what he was saying. The housing market was out of control. Now it's crashing. It's good news in the long run. Like taking a shot. Painful, sometimes there's a miserable reaction, but it keeps you from dying.

The rumor mill has it that the McCain campaign has been doing practice debates with Palin and she looks like a total idiot. They are peeing their pants!
