Higher education's mandatory political participation

The linked Opinion piece describes how applicants for faculty positions in the University of California are FIRST evaluated on their personal essay on "diversity and inclusion." This exercise excludes 80% of the applicants, after which they start to look at peripheral things like ACADEMIC CREDENTIALS!

As bad as this is, it also applies to the faculty in STEM subjects. I'm sure the nuclear physics students are gratified to know that their professors are suitably sensitive to the idiocies of the day.

Where are the ADULTS in this picture? The Board of Trustees? The tuition-paying parents who, presumably, want their children to be taught by the best available academicians?

Ironically, in a delayed response to the anti-communist campaigns of the 50's, the University adopted a policy of NO POLITICAL TEST for any applicant.

What happened? Seriously.
