From Jim Clifton is Chairman and CEO at Gallup.

If you perform a minimum of one hour of work in a week and are paid at least $20 -- maybe someone pays you to mow their lawn -- you're not officially counted as unemployed in the much-reported 5.6%. Few Americans know this.

Yet another figure of importance that doesn't get much press: those working part time but wanting full-time work. If you have a degree in chemistry or math and are working 10 hours part time because it is all you can find -- in other words, you are severely underemployed -- the government doesn't count you in the 5.6%. Few Americans know this.

There's no other way to say this. The official unemployment rate, which cruelly overlooks the suffering of the long-term and often permanently unemployed as well as the depressingly underemployed,
amounts to a Big Lie.
Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren't throwing parties to toast "falling" unemployment.
Gallup defines a good job as 30+ hours per week for an organization that provides a regular paycheck. Right now, the U.S. is delivering at a staggeringly low rate of 44%, which is the number of full-time jobs as a percent of the adult population, 18 years and older.

The Big Lie: 5.6% Unemployment

Here’s something that many Americans -- including some of the smartest and most educated among us -- don’t know: The official unemployment rate, as reported by the U.S. Department of Labor, is extremely misleading.

Right now, we’re hearing much celebrating from the media, the White House and Wall Street about how unemployment is “down” to 5.6%. The cheerleading for this number is deafening. The media loves a comeback story, the White House wants to score political points and Wall Street would like you to stay in the market.

None of them will tell you this: If you, a family member or anyone is unemployed and has subsequently given up on finding a job -- if you are so hopelessly out of work that you’ve stopped looking over the past four weeks -- the Department of Labor doesn’t count you as unemployed. That’s right. While you are as unemployed as one can possibly be, and tragically may never find work again, you are not counted in the figure we see relentlessly in the news -- currently 5.6%. Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren’t throwing parties to toast “falling” unemployment.

Well how nice of Gallup to finally let that cat out of the bag... six frikken years late.

but his followers don't care how much he and his administration lies or misleads the people he Represents.

Thankfully the people finally caught onto them and took them out of power over us, by giving Republicans control of Congress

Indeed- And as I have said here many, many times- I have 100% confidence that Obama can drive down UE to an unbelievable .0% and all 4,247 jobs are filled.

December Unemployment Rates: 5.6% (U.3), 11.2% (U.6), 23.0% (ShadowStats) ----- Shadow Government Statistics - Home Page

Forbes puts our unemployment rate at 12.4%. Depending on methodology, it only gets worse from there. Democrats know things are bad but they won't admit it. They constantly carp (legitimately) that the American middle class is disappearing. Why are they disappearing?

Furthermore, how much faith will you ever again put in a Gallup poll?

It is the U-3 number which clearly defines what it is attempting to measure and what methodology is used, so I'm not sure where the "lie" part comes in especially since they have all been going down.

Yessir...

There is little which is relevant to popular culture; which decidedly includes the modern media... that is not defined by Deceit, Fraud and Ignorance.

Relativism has built a house of cards on a stack of lies.

This just doesn't make sense to me.

How is he "daring to tell the truth" when the definition of U-3 is clearly defined for many years and the methodology behind it published? How exactly is it daring, are you thinking the CIA is now going to take him out?

People have been discussing the merits/faults of U-3 versus other measures for as long as message boards on the internet, now this guy impresses you as daring for pointing out that which has been public knowledge for so many years.

The media loves a comeback story, the White House wants to score political points and Wall Street would like you to stay in the market.
This also doesn't make sense, neither the White House nor Wall Street came up with the U-3 measure, and the media has been publishing the same one as the unemployment rate for quite some time including when it was going up rapidly during the recession.

So the media is being accused of having an agenda and "loving a comeback story" by publishing U-3, how does that rationalize with them publishing exact same number when it was going up to 10%?

There's no minimum pay. I don't know where he's getting that $20 number from. And unpaid work in a family business or farm is employed if 15 or more hours.

Yet another figure of importance that doesn't get much press: those working part time but wanting full-time work. If you have a degree in chemistry or math and are working 10 hours part time because it is all you can find -- in other words, you are severely underemployed -- the government doesn't count you in the 5.6%. Why would you count someone who has a job as unemployed?

There's no other way to say this. The official unemployment rate, which cruelly overlooks the suffering of the long-term and often permanently unemployed as well as the depressingly underemployed, amounts to a Big Lie.
If it was purported or presented to be a measure of suffering then that would be true. But it is not meant to be and no one has ever claimed it is a measure of suffering.
Right now, as many as 30 million Americans are either out of work or severely underemployed. Trust me, the vast majority of them aren't throwing parties to toast "falling" unemployment.
In December, there were 8.3 million people not working but looking for work, 6.2 million not working who said they wanted a job but hadn't looked for work in the last month or were unable to accept a job if offered. And 7 million who want to and could work 35+ hours/week, but worked less than that due to slow business or couldn't find full time job. (all numbers not seasonally adjusted). That's far short of his 6 million.
Gallup defines a good job as 30+ hours per week for an organization that provides a regular paycheck. Right now, the U.S. is delivering at a staggeringly low rate of 44%, which is the number of full-time jobs as a percent of the adult population, 18 years and older.
But about 3/4 of those who work part time are voluntary, not due to economic reasons.

Numbers are made the same way as in the Bush and Clinton administrations. So if these are lies, then all the figures during those administrations were lies. Get over it, wingnuts, under President Obama we are pulling out of the Great Republican Recession.
