Back when I was a nineteen year old missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, I came upon a teaching of the Atonement that has made a great impression upon me throughout my life. I want to share this teaching with you and have you give me your thought on this teaching.

Here is the teaching:

Cleaver's Mormon Conversion

Based on the provided search results, here is a summary of Eldridge Cleaver's conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) and his association with W. Cleon Skousen:
  1. Initial Contact: Eldridge Cleaver, a former Black Panther leader, met with Elder Paul H. Dunn, a Mormon Church administrator, in the late 1970s. This encounter marked the beginning of Cleaver’s exploration of Mormonism.
  2. Influence of Carl Loeber: Cleaver was introduced to Carl Loeber, a Mormon activist who had renounced his involvement with the Black Power movement. Loeber’s influence and testimony likely played a significant role in Cleaver’s decision to investigate Mormonism further.
  3. Meeting with Cleon Skousen: Cleaver attended a “Know Your Religion” class in San Jose, California, where he met W. Cleon Skousen, a prominent Mormon author and conservative thinker. Skousen’s teachings and writings on Mormon doctrine and eschatology likely resonated with Cleaver.
  4. Baptism: Eldridge Cleaver was baptized into the LDS Church in December 1983. Although he faced initial challenges due to being on probation, he eventually received permission to be baptized.
  5. Association with Skousen: After his baptism, Cleaver became acquainted with Skousen’s work and teachings. Skousen’s conservative values and anti-communist stance aligned with Cleaver’s own political transformation.
  6. LDS Church Activity: Cleaver’s activity within the LDS Church was not consistent, but he remained a member until his death in 1998. He occasionally attended church services and lectured at Mormon gatherings.
  7. Legacy: Cleaver’s conversion to Mormonism and association with Cleon Skousen reflect his search for spiritual guidance and his desire to reconcile his past activism with his newfound Christian beliefs.
It is essential to note that while Cleaver’s conversion and association with Skousen are well-documented, there may be varying accounts and perspectives on the details of his journey.
