Too bad you're not a parent (well, maybe that's good). There is something I call "Dad's Prerogative" and it worked very well for me. Son #2 wanted a diamond earing for BD 16, most of the other guys on the baseball team had them and Dad (me) substituted an A2000 instead, a choice he made and one he still appreciates; Son #1 wanted to sky dive, Dad (me) said "hell no" and took sons to NYC to see our home team, the Giants, play the Yankees (Bonds v. Clemens - where the Yanks walked Barry four times and he was HBP in another AB) plus a trip to the baseball HOF.

I didn't encourage football either, both played baseball in high school and son #2 basketball. Son #1 officiated football ( Pop Warner & High School) until he finished college. And yes, I played Football and had a great time, the knees and shoulder aches and pain remind me everyday of the experience.
