"Perry wants us to know some other facts about his long record as Texas governor. His website is proud of his economic policies: “Texans enjoy one of the lowest tax burdens in the country and one of the lowest government debt burdens per capita”; he “cut taxes on small businesses and delivered a historic property tax cut”; he “protected the state’s Rainy Day Fund, which has $6 billion set aside for future needs.

Here are some things that Perry never speaks about. Texas has the second-highest poverty rate among the 50 states, behind only Mississippi. It has the second-highest percentage of population without a high school diploma. Texas leads the nation in the percentage of people with no health insurance, over one quarter. It is tied with Mississippi for having the biggest percentage of workers paid at or below the minimum wage."

Listening to Perry you would think Texas is the greatest place on earth!

Texas does offer good opportunities for employment if you are in the right field. However, overall, the Texas economy is doing no better than anywhere else, and the facts you mention are all true. If you're poor in Texas, things couldn't be worse.

But the best thing about Texas is the fact that the lowest income earners pay three times more in taxes percentage wise then the highest income earners. It's a fuckin wonderful system if you're rich. And this is what Perry wants to bring to Washington? No thank you.

Perry excels in a race to the bottom. The problem is while the bottom in the US isn't too bad the bottom globally is a long way down. Huge profits for corporations, desperation for the workers. Not the vision I want to experience.

If Paul or Romney get the nomination, I'm voting GOP.
If Perry gets it or Whackmann is anywhere near the ticket, I'm voting Obama.

Being governor of an oil producing state should bring with it huge economic advantages that politicians in other states can only dream about. With such economic advantages, any warm body in the Texas governor's office should be able to far outdistance his counterparts in non oil states - no matter how competent they are!

The real question to be answered is how many of the jobs created on Governor Perry's watch were more than the minimum wage variety?

Where are you getting your information?

Texas is not second for poverty rates in the US.

51 District of Columbia 21.3% 115
50 Mississippi 20.1% 571
49 Louisiana 18.3% 748
48 New Mexico 17.9% 347
47 Alabama 16.7% 750

And the numbers which were released for today show:

ATLANTA (AP) - New Census data shows that Georgia's poverty rate was the third highest in the country in 2010, up two spots from last year, with more than 1.8 million residents counted among the poor.

The only states with higher poverty rates in 2010 were Louisiana and Mississippi. Nationally, 15.1 percent of Americans were living in poverty last year

Georgia has 3rd highest poverty rate among states

You'll have to excuse mr. involved, his study came out 7 months before Ground Zero was called Ground Zero and a month after Bush was inaugurated.

In this country, it's easier to not work than it is to work.
.....Especially if you're a Prosecutor, in Texas!!!!!

Texas Justice

"The past few years in Texas have seen a parade of DNA exonerations: more than 40 men so far. The first exonerations were big news, but the type has grown smaller as Texans have watched a dismaying march of exonerees, their wasted years haunting the public conscience.

Yet a case in Williamson County, just north of Austin, is raising the ante. Michael Morton had been sentenced to life in prison for murdering his wife. He was released six months ago — 25 years after being convicted — when DNA testing proved he was not the killer.

Instead of merely seeking financial compensation, Morton is working to fix the system. His lawyers, including The Innocence Project, want to hold the man who put him behind bars accountable. They also want new laws to make sure Morton's story is never repeated."

Texas just raised taxes. Texas joins eight other states in taking legislative action requiring online-only retailers, notably Amazon.com, to collect sales tax. Online retailers will have to collect sales tax in Texas beginning July 1 2012.

Anytime you close tax loophole or start a new tax it is raising taxes. Texas is only one of 8 states to impose this new tax. It is a tax on the lower & middle class who shop on-line to save money. If a rich person buts a new yacht or jet, they will simply register it somewhere that has no sales or luxury tax.

It is not a new tax.
Lower and middle class should pay their state sales tax.
If the people of the state do not like their tax rate, vote people in who will lower it.
Everybody should pay their state taxes.

I spend a fair amount of time in Houston.... trust me, clear out the illegals, this picture changes dramatically.

That is bullshit! John Kerry did not pay the $500k tax on his yacht. He was not forced to pay even though he imposed taxes on us. These fucks are also allowed to use shell corporations to avoid their income taxes as well. But god forbid someone avoid a $60 sales tax on their iPad.
