Almost six hours into a tumultuous, first-of-its-kind appeal hearing before the Jefferson Parish School Board on Friday, the father of a suspended Harvey fourth grader stormed out of the proceeding, calling the board “shameful.”

Nyron Harrison grew frustrated after his attorney tried to call the Louisiana solicitor general to testify on behalf of his son, 9-year-old Ka'Mauri Harrison, who had been suspended from school for handling a BB gun during a virtual class. School Board member Mark Morgan, who was running the meeting, objected to the request and, with no opposition from other members, refused to let Murrill take the stand.

“Y’all shameful,” Harrison said loudly, before gathering up Ka’Mauri and walking out of the room. “We’re leaving. Y’all ain’t a court!”

The School Board eventually voted to reduce Ka’Mauri's suspension from six days to three, not that it makes much difference because the suspension was already served. And by then the family had left the board’s meeting room, though they later returned.

Nyron Harrison’s outburst came near the end of a long day of at times testy testimony in a hearing the board held to hold to comply with the “Ka’Mauri Harrison Act,” the recently adopted state law that requires school systems to write new discipline policies specific to virtual schooling and to extend extra levels of appeal to some students who have been suspended.

Wow. On the list of stupid crap is this. Wanted to expel him from moving a BB gun out of the way from his brother after being forced into virtual learning. Reason 586, I will not return to live in New Orleans.

We need cost effective alternative school choices.

It's pretty ridiculous sounding. Suspended for 6 days for having a bb gun in a virtual classroom?
:eusa_doh:

“The principal got on the phone and said, 'Your son is being charged for having a weapon in the classroom, and he is going to be suspended and recommended for expulsion,'” Harrison testified.

Agreed. The state is forcing this type of schooling, and folks homes ARE NOT a classroom, thus? Their logic is wrong.

Unbelieveable...sounds like the father and son are both doing right---but the school board are still being POS about it.

I don’t know what sorts of rules were set up and explained to parents for the virtual classrooms. Still, the BB gun couldn’t pose a threat to other students, so any punishments should take that into account.

This sounds like a situation that should have started with a reminder or warning, unless perhaps it was a repeated behavior.

The only leftist-run communities worth living in are wealthy, liberal, Lillie-white, neighborhoods.

Again, this is why we need to eliminate public schools, and have everyone pay for private schooling with vouchers.

How can you fix this level of stupid? This is exactly why government fails at everything.

They may be wealthy and liberal, but they are not very bright, are they!

Don't they know that some of the people for whom their hearts bleed are demanding that those wealthy liberals give up their neighborhoods to the marginalized?

Talk about being hoist by their own petard!

Dumb idea. It will never work and we cannot afford it.

In Africa, where the public schools are so terrible, that teachers don't even show up....

They have a wide spread private schools all over the place. If you create a market, there will be people who will find a way to meet that market.

This is why in a free market, car companies don't only make luxury cars. The profit margin on a luxury car is more than triple that of a regular grocery getter car.

Why don't all car companies only make luxury cars? Because there is far more money to be made selling cheaper cars to 200 million non-luxury buyers.

Same is true of every aspect of the economy. There is more money to make cheaper affordable products for the masses, than expensive products and services to the elite few.

You make it so that there is a huge market for low cost quality education, people will fill that market.

It can work, and people will be able to afford it.f Chile is a perfect example of this. They have a majority privatized school system, and their people are way less wealthy than our people.

This sounds like one of those ridiculous "zero tolerance" policies that were enacted to allow school administrators to avoid making rational decisions...and defending them.

You don't have to be an incurable cynic to disdain just about everyone who serves on school boards. There are many more nefarious reasons than good ones to volunteer your time as a school director.

Fuck you. The local citizens who serve on school boards put up with every headache, complaint, and general bullshit imaginable - for zero compensation. What the fuck do you do to be of service to the students in your community? The only thing you've ever done as far as we can tell here, to improve education of be of service to anyone is to bitch and moan about things.
