Tea Party Groups Suffer Another Huge Defeat -- Are They Toast?

The strong bipartisan House vote on Wednesday for the farm bill was the third major defeat for conservative lobbying groups since the government shutdown, a sign that they're losing their stranglehold on the House Republican majority.

The trio of defeats: The October bill to re-open the shuttered government and avert a catastrophic debt default (with no strings attached), the December budget agreement to raise spending and mitigate automatic sequester cuts and now the farm bill to renew agriculture subsidies and food stamps.

Tea party groups such as the Club For Growth and Heritage Action fought these initiatives every step of the way and threatened to use their scorecards to downgrade lawmakers who voted for them. In October, they lost the battle when Speaker John Boehner put a clean bill on the floor to fund the government and avert default (although most Republicans voted against it). But the budget and farm bill agreements each passed with the support of 70 percent of House Republicans, a more troubling sign for the tea party groups.

I watched some of the floor debate on this bill. The vote was some Democrats and Republicans for and some Democrats and Republicans against. Seems about as good a compromise bill as there is. What the Republicans can do in Congress and what they can do on the campaign trail is still worlds apart however. A major consideration will be how much the mid-term is a party base vote. From the Republican response to the SOTU I would guess they are going for a base turnout strategy, worked for them in 2010. Why change what works, or in their case, why change what doesn't work?

There was a one percent cut to food stamps. Big whoop.

The Tea Party did get a small concession when some farm subsidies were turned into insurance, basically guaranteeing a price floor for crops you actually grow instead of just a check for your farm whether you grew anything or not.

That sounds like a savings, but it could end up costing us more during droughts or floods or a winter freeze or any other disastrous conditions.

You know...because of...global climate change.

They've been successful in turning people off to the American government, destroying decorum and making the debate much more base and vulgar.

The Tea Party has had no success in the federal government, nor can they have. This is because the Tea Party runs counter to the culture in the federal government. That is why they are viewed as "obstructionists". Everyone just sits around betting when the Tea Party will buckle to big government.

The Tea Party must focus on amending the Constitution through Article V to restrict the federal government by creating amendments to balance the budget and impose term limits. It is only then that the Tea Party can participate in the federal government.
