The Tax Foundation calculates that Tax Freedom Day for 2010 is April 9, which means that by Friday, Americans will have spent nearly 100 days working just to pay their taxes. If Democrats have their way, Tax Freedom Day will keep getting later and later.

Hold that thought. Imagine for a moment that Tax Freedom Day was Dec. 31. In other words, picture working 365 days a year for the government. Now, the government would "give" you a place to sleep, food to eat and clothes to wear, but all your income would really be Washington's income to allocate as it saw fit. Some romantics might call this sort of arrangement "socialism" or "communism." But another perfectly good word for it is "slavery" or, if you prefer, involuntary servitude.

It's academic anyway when the government is spending 58 cents in collected money and 42 cents in burrowed money out of every dollar spent. So if it takes 3 months plus a week and a half to pay for the money spent that is collected, it will take another 2 and a half months to pay the other 40% of the spending.

The actual tax freedom day is July 1.

We need to end the insanity.

20% doesn't sound too irrational. Our Sales Tax around here is 7%, more at a tavern in the city. Property tax is irrational around here and I really can't even figure out what it is. My income is taxed by the Feds, the state, the city and the township.

If you count the SS set aside as a tax, that's another 14% gone with the wind. If you're younger than 40 you have an excellent chance of never seeing a dime of payback from it.

I don't mind paying taxes. What I hate is idiots spending the money like it was piss in a pot they were trying to empty.

Like I said, it's 20% if you take no deductions, which is rather stupid. You have a deduction for yourself, your kids, your mortgage, in my state your sales tax...there are many many deductions and if you were honest you'd tell us how much you made last year and what you actually paid in taxes.

Well, now they have implemented Health care reform, we need a major Tax reform. And BTW they are bringing up the V A T again for this country, another system modeled after the European Value Added Tax system.

It's nice to think we are 'tax free' at some point in the federal taxes, but the multitude of other taxes, known as fees, tolls, etc etc keep our earned dollars sliced into bits n pieces.

I wonder if the VAL will ever come to fruition in the US and replace state taxes etc? As greedy as the government is they may likely use VAT along with a string of other taxes that used to be known as state taxes.

Taxes paid at the point of sale, VAT, may have some bad side effects also, but that debate has been repeated many times before.

Not to worry folks, the end result for most of us is the same, we'll 'pay da man' until we die and if we had anything left, he'll take that too!

I didn't much like the national sales tax idea when the Republicans talked about implementing it so I won't be a hypocrite and say I like it now that Obama's administration is talking about implementing it.

My brother is a fairly new attorney in California (graduated 3 years ago, passed the bar 2 years ago). He is not married, renting, and uses an accountant. He paid close to 40% in taxes just between State and Federal last year.

One thing that cannot be hidden is government spending as a percent of GDP. It is approaching the same percentage as Europe, which just shows how much is paid to "support" the government in taxes.
